OT: Distant galaxies... |
I know that I've seen this covered before, but I can't remember what
the explanation was. So, if we're seeing galaxies that are billions of
light years away, shouldn't they be billions of years old? Then why do
they look complete and formed like our galaxy and the other around us?
Thanks
.

And lo, it came to pass that did attempt to escape
burning at the stake, by proclaiming in alt.atheism:

Because galaxies have been a feature of the Universe for most of its
existence. The first galaxies formed sometime within the first 2 billion
years, so we should see them out to least 12 billion light years.

Yup.
Then why do

"Complete"? Galaxies were one of the first structures in the universe,
before even stars, as it is the coalescing of a galaxy that compresses gas
in to the smaller structures. It is no surprise at all that by the time
stars began to shine, galaxies were already maturing.

1 - A large number of htem don't look "complete and formed" (What does
that mean, anyway? How do you know a galaxy is "done"? Does it stop
swirling?);
and
2 - we're still not completely sure what our galaxy even looks like,
though we've a far better clue than we did when the fundies were in
controll.

Actually, they tend to look "younger", but galaxies can live for a
very long time. A galaxy a billion years younger than ours is not
going to look particularly different. Andromeda is "only" 2 million
light years away, that is not particularly far nor is 2 million years
all that much younger for a galaxy. The stuff we see from very far
away, to the extent we can make out the details, does look different
and younger.

It is true that the early Universe looked somewhat younger than
expected. That does not mean it looked just as old as the current,
just that galaxies and such formed earlier than people had thought.
