Sometimes, the future is obvious in the present; sometimes, it is never
more obscure. The first railway engine, car and plane obviously
portended a clear direction of change. But if, 50 years ago, anyone had
predicted that Britain would one day boast no more than 9,000 coal
miners, they would have been laughed out of court.
