Are any PDA's better at serving as an e-book reader?
I've recently obtained a large grant and it requires reading through a fair
number of document so I though this might be a good chance to pick one up.
OK, OK, I just bought a CD with all the Doc Savage novels on them and this
is an excuse to buy a new toy.
I'd almost forgotten what a kick it is to read those things.

Pretty much any model is fine, as long as you can convert the e-books
accordingly. File converters are generally easy to find online, though mine
has a bit of trouble with PDF files.
What format are your e-books in?

Good; there's a little program called ***** Converter that can put it into
(IIRC) .txt format. Going from there to anything else is easy enough. I was
lucky with mine: Sony bundled an offer for a free license for "Documents to
Go" (a basic MS Word & Excel reader). I just convert a file to text-only,
work it up in Word to get the font I want, then send it to the PDA.
The down-side: I was in the middle of reading something on my PDA when
Hurricane Ivan came to town. We didn't have electricity for about a week,
so there was no way of recharging the battery. Fortunately, regular books
only need light to work ;)

I am pure and do not have any idea what you are talking about.
Will it convert both ways?
It might be hard on me if not...

Dunno about converting _to_ .lit format; someone posted a mess of Alistair
MacLean ("Where Eagles Dare", "The Guns of Navarone", "Bear Island" and
maybe a double-dozen more) last year, some of it in .lit, and the converter
worked nicely.
Unfortunately, now I have quite a few MacLean books I want to buy. And
Vonnegut. And George R. R. Martin. And...
But I'm glad I didn't buy the "Sword of Truth" series; I test-drove the
first one and made it maybe halfway through before giving up on it.
And then there's "Shogun"...excellent book, but HOLY CRAP it took forever
in e-book format, probably because there's no real indicator of how far
along you are other than a little scroll bar. Not quite the same as seeing
the heavy side of the book migrating from your right hand to your left.

You might want to consider a tablet PC. The viewing area is larger so a
bigger font size can be used.

Depends on the format of the e-books.
There were some that were proprietary formats.
First of all, you need to figure out formats and figure out
what you need, and find a PDA that supports that. You have
Palm and Windows CE. I have no idea any more what is going
on in the world of e-books, for all I know they are in Adobe
Reader with DMA attributes activated.

Thanks to all. I have them in HTML, PDF and the .lit format.
they present better in the .lit format and it's easier to mark your place.
The latter is important in a Doc Savage book as it is common to have
essentially the same text and very similar amazzzzing escapes and saves
several places in the book.
But remember he invented the telephone answering machine and his super
modern plane had electric starters and you could cruise in comfort in wicker
chairs at the amazing speed of 200 mph.
