OT: Eurovision song contest |
Did anyone catch the eurovision semi finals last night? What do you
think? Favourites? Duds? I usually watch it for laughs, and this year
I'm laughing louder than usual :-)
In any case, the voting is mostly political, which is why the
countries in the mediterranean/eastern europe usually win.
One thing I don't understand is why everyone, including the bookies,
have Greece as their favourite? I found it very mediocre, but it was
VERY eurosong-ish, I suppose.

Actually I don't buy the political argument usually advocated
by one T. Wogan but think it more a cultural thing.
Groups of countries, where languages are common, tend to
have similar tastes in music. The Meditteranian countries have
different tastes in popular music to us so it is more likely
that neighbouring countries will find one anothers music
more appealing so tend to vote for one another.
We generally don't care for French pop music for example
and prefer music from Ireland, and the Greeks probably find
Scandanavian music to be 'cold' (?) perhaps. To win you need
music that transcends these various cultures and appeals to
all. So rather than write music that just appeals to
our own audiences here we should be taking a wider view if we
seek to win. Maybe next time we should send composers out
to listen to pop music cultures across Europe with a view to
'synthesise' a more international appeal. Our pop music
scene is certainly badly in need of something new.

18/24 max point votes given to neighbours. Also many 8's and 10's to
other neighbours, as well as countries with substantial immigrant
colonies voting for "their own".
I'd reexamine my theory if I were you :-)

That reinforces it. :-)
Obviously there is some degree of 'political voting', Greece gave
no votes to its old enemy neighbour Turkey though Turkey gave
Greece 12 but I still think it is largely a cultural things.Eastern
Europe is culturally different to western Europe as the voting pattern
(on a quick glance) shows. Just my theory, cannot prove it.
The scores are at

I watched it last night but gave up after a while as it was
universally dreadful. Frenetic dancing, cameras weaving
about all over the place with rapid cutting, mad set and
more frenetic noise than music. First time I did not stay until the
end. B

It's good see alt.atheism's finest brains brought to bear on this serious
matter.
I do recall when Sandie Shaw won in 1967 not so long after the World Cup victory
how much it lifted the mood of the country.

Well it is more interesting than, gods, Jesus Christ and Christianity,
that's for sure :-)

And I can even still remember it!
My favourite ever group was a French one (IIRC) whose name I
forget (Baccarat I think) . I can remember joking with a friend that
he can have one of the girls and I will have the other. It was a good
song they had but sadly they did not win :-(
