The problem is that I remember a lot of those ads from when they
originally appeared. I remember that back in the early eighties, I was
dying to buy a Sinclair. (Good thing that I waited a few years.)

For some of my science classes I had to use those damned log tables too.
The only calculators available then were like those big Monroe
electro-mechanical calculators that sounded like a passing freight train
when even doing a simple multiplication.

The uni flat stated people weren't to program their calculators (as if
they could check), they wanted to student to know how to do things by
hand. The calculator was intended to be a tool, not a crutch.
Went to do a Physics test and my calculator died. Told the
instructor. "No problem, do them by hand and I'll grade you on what
you get done."
I think I got 50% of the test done. I would have been sunk if many
tables hadn't been in the back of the textbook.

Hell, I graduated in '86 and never once did any math teacher even attempt to
teach us how to obtain a square root manually. I still don't know how to do
it.

I was taught to extract square and cube roots manually, as well as to find the
imaginary roots of higher-degree-than-quadratic equations, all in grade school, iirc.
I couldn't tell you the first step for any of these algorithms now.
