OT: Film. "Ninth Gate". |
'twas on the box the other night. A rather nice horror film IMO.
Anyone seen it? As with "Rome" I was quite impressed!

I'd hesitate to call it horror. More like suspense.
But very well done, regardless.

I liked Ninth Gate very much. The film is underrated, IMO. I read the
novel before the film was made, and the adaptation is quite brilliant as
these things go.

Eight pounds? Either you're referring to 'pounds sterling' or to
a book by Norman Mailer. ;-)

I've never seen John Cusack or Johnny Depp do a bad movie. (Depp is in
NG, for those who don't know.) NG was Polanski's first flick after the
statute of limitations ran out on the US charge against him. He boffed
a 15 year old a decade or so earlier. (Ick!) He's still never gone
back to the US.
It's an interesting take on the christ/devil myths, that the devil
chooses who s/he wants, and isn't conjured up by wannabes. Frank
Langella (of the 1970s Dracula flicks) makes for a great bad guy,
doesn't he?
In a way, the film is reminiscent of "Psycho"; after Janet Leigh's
character is killed, the only person left to identify with is Norman
Bates. In NG, everybody is loathsome, there are no heroes.
The most vile part has to be the sex scene; one could never call that
"making love". It's an abomination, them screwing while a building
burns in the distance.

She was 13, and it was actual rape, not merely statutory rape.
Furthermore, he was convicted, and fled before being sentence. There's
no statute of limitations on executing the sentence of someone who's
already been convicted.
He can never enter the US again, or any other country which has an
extradition treaty with the US. That's why he recently testified
remotely at a libel trial in the UK. If he had showed up in person,
he would have been arrested and escorted back to the US to serve his
prison sentence.

I think the victim (fairly) recently made some statements about this,
but I can't for the life of me remember what she said.
Mind you, extradition law in the UK has recently changed in the UK
with respect to the US (very badly thought out IMO) so perhaps Roman
may not be able to visit here any more either.

Not that this excuses Roman's behavior, but you gotta wonder about a mother
who leaves her 13-year-old kid with a man like that. What was she thinking?

No, it doesn't. Not at all.

"Money and Favours by proxy or formal settlement"? The daughter as a
commodity?
Alas, this kind of thing isn't that uncommon. It doesn't excuse
Polanski, but it may put a context on the offence which while it may
not amount to significant mitigation, may have put a marginally
different light on things.
Still, that said, Polanski makes good films. I'd particularly
recommend:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0074811/ (trust me....!)
and of course the classic Vampire movie:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0061655/
(watch out for the Jewish guy who becomes a vampire *while* being
drowned in a case of wine).
On the other hand, I like Ken Russell as a director, and at one point
sorted out his son's PC when I was (and I kid you not) an IT manger in
Ware.
Mea Maxima Culpa.
But this raises a question:
Polanski is a convicted rapist. Are we then required in a moral sense
to ignore his films?

No more so than we are required to boycott Volkswagen, on account of
the fact that it was the brainchild of Adolf Hitler.
While I've seen comments that Polanski has always had something of a
young girl/woman fetish (13 is right on the border of pedophilia), I
can't help but wonder how the murder of his 8-months-pregnant wife
(Sharon Tate) at the hands of Charles Manson's cult affected his
judgment.

She has stated that she sees no point in Polanski being put in prison,
having long since gotten over the incident.
The prosecutor's office, however, has made it clear that if he shows
up, he's going to prison.
Mind you, extradition law in the UK has recently changed in the UK

He can't already. Like I said, he had to give remote testimony in a
libel trial there to avoid the risk of being extradited.
