The scramble by congressional Republicans and White House officials to
show they're serious about dealing with the budget recalls the classic
1951 novel "The Catcher in the Rye," whose main character, Holden
Caulfield, denounces almost everyone as a "phony." Well, on the budget,
most Republicans are phonies. So are most Democrats. The resulting
"debates" are less about controlling the budget than about trying to
embarrass the other side.

Frankly, I think he should tackle poverty within the USA before he
tries to solve the rest of the world's problems.
BTW, did you hear that according to law FEMA had to send Louisiana
a bill for some fraction of the "help" they got after the storm, and
the bill worked out to be half the state's annual income?

Did you hear new emails released show FEMA director Michael Brown was
joking and sending emails concerned about how stylish his shirt looked
2 days into the flooding?
The Repubs make it a self-fulfilling prophecy: to prove how ineffective
is at solving America's problems, make government as ineffective as
possible.

Well, I'm going to go out on a limb here and say I think most Republicans
are every bit as disgusted as anyone else at good ol' Brownie, and are
becoming very ***** at an Administration that puts ineffectual twits
like this guy in charge of an agency as important as FEMA. For purely
political reasons they can't come right out and say "George W. Bush, you are
a fucking moron who should be dropped from a very high altitude on to your
stinking ranch", but the mood seems to be very much there in disguise. They
want Rove gone, they want Bush to clean his house because they want some of
these nightmares to be nothing more than distant memories come 2006.
To be honest with you, the only real hope for the Republicans lies in the
pathetic state of the Democrats, who are being handed a Christmas gift and
just don't seem to have anyone who can capitalize on it.

Let me explain something to you about the Republican base.
they have a love/hate relationship with Dubya.
Most don't hate Rove. Rove has his hands up Dubya's scrawny butt,
moving him like a puppet. The relationship between Bush and his base is
simple: Bush does something the base doesn't like such as sending 2000
troops to die in Iraq and the base gets upset. The base threatens to
withdraw its support, its votes, its campaign stickers. Then Bush
caters to the base's whims. Or more appropriately, Rove pulls the
strings to get Bush to cater to the base. Bush promises an amendment to
kill Same Sex Marriage, the base rekindles its love affair with Bush.
Look how quickly the base forgot Osama Bin Laden's name and the fact he
hasn't been caught yet while at the same time invoking 9/11 any chance
they get. The Base forgives any government incompetence as long as Bush
promises a gesture to shift the country their way.
Same thing with Miers then Scalito. The Base doesn't care Bush
appointed the head of FEMA who celebrated while NO drowned. The Base
probably figures "Ah hell, NO was a blue state anyway, good riddance,"
(don't bother telling them NO is a city, not a state). The Base
forgives Bush at almost lightspeed anytime he promises to make the
country less and less democratic and more and more right-wing. Because
for some inexplicable reason, the base considers
The base loves Bush because Bush does what the base wants. The
Constitution, the safety of the nation, etc. all mean zip to Bush. Bush
lives or dies based on his ability to pander to the powerful right, no
matter the injustice or unconstitutionality.

Personally, I thought most of that was irrelevant. You don't expect
the head of FEMA to row a boat or put his finger in the *****, and if
he's hanging around headquarters -- whether in Washington or a field
HQ, he's going to have irrelevant conversations from time to time,
just like everyone on the planet does.
And his "is there something I should do" message seemed altogether
appropriate.
(I do vaguely remember that there was one comment that showed signs of
a problem, though I've already forgotten what it was.)

The Repubs make it a self-fulfilling prophecy: to prove how
ineffective is at solving America's problems, make government as
ineffective as possible.

His handlers put him up as a candidate for the express purpose of
rolling back all the progress we've made in the past half century.
After all, the rich weren't getting richer fast enough.

Absolutely!
We have $200 billion to squander in the Middle East but let's not be all
fiscally irresponsible and do something for our own people in our own
country!
('Sides, those people will just spend it on food or housing or something
like that)

The mayor of Baton Rouge said on TV recently that they had just begun
to get the first money from FEMA. And that FEMA was demanding that
they hand money over to faith-based organizations before the city
could expect significant funds.
