For independence, we all can be thankful

There are certain things you can count on each Fourth of July. The
neighborhood's self-appointed grillmaster is going to burn the steaks,
and your favorite uncle is going to drink too much and start telling
family secrets.
Oh, yeah: And somebody is going to brush off Frederick Douglass' famous
Independence Day speech and use it to bolster his argument that black
Americans have no reason to celebrate Independence Day.
