Dr Franklin Goes to France: How America Was Born in Monarchical Europe
by Stacy Schiff
477pp, Bloomsbury, =A320
On March 20 1778 Benjamin Franklin, the celebrated American polymath,
was presented to Louis XVI, king of France, at Versailles. His brown
velvet suit was so plain, an onlooker recorded, that Franklin might
have been taken "for a big farmer, so great was his contrast with the
other diplomats, who were all powdered in full dress, and splashed all
over with gold and ribbons". Introduced to the young monarch as a
"deputy of the United Provinces of North America", Franklin's big
moment marked, says Stacy Schiff, nothing less than America's
introduction to the world stage.
