OT: Freethinker Website Owners |
Something I'm doing... I got a bit of a scare after reading Jeff Reid's
website at
www.religionisbullshit.com and he said his server crashed... and all of his
files were gone. (Evidently he had the luck of having his site backed up on
his hard-drive.)
Something I'm doing, I wanted to share with people... I got one of those
CD-Rewritable drives for recordable CD's --- and I'm going through making a
mirror of our websites.
It's just a suggestion, evidently webservers can lose your files... if
you've got a small site, the copy on your hard-drive may be good enough.
MAYBE. But if your site is sizeable, and been around for awhile... for
instance, I re-formatted my hard-drive and lost all of my files one time,
the only copies were up in cyberspace. Now, I'll have a backup, in case
something happened by a freak coincidence, to my hard-drive and the server.
It's just a suggestion for webmasters to consider... if you have a
CD-Recordable drive... use it.

I keep all my web sites on a zip disk. I may make a second copy just in
case, but I'm pretty comfortable about my data security for the nonce.

I don't have one of those. In fact, I hadn't messed with this drive until my
kid came in with some CD-Recordables... she gave me one, after I thought
"maybe that would be some security in case something happened" (as with
Jeff's site).
I'm not familiar with Zip disks... I only started messing with this one
today (after a year of having the computer.) Any other suggestions for a
newbie *me*, are welcomed.

If your computer has USB connectors, you might consider a Jump Drive.
128 meg of memory chip for about $70, but it's only really useful if you
want to move data around between compatible computers. I love mine, but
then again, I'm a programmer.
Backing up your data on a CD is a good idea, particularly if you make
infrequent changes to your site. But if you're adding pages every week
or so, your archive can get pretty cluttered, and a zip disk would be a
better solution, I think. The drives aren't very expensive and the
disks, with 100 meg or 250 meg of space are relatively cheap these days.
Cheers!

Sounds like a worthwhile investment. (Anyone who'd ever switch to a
different webserver - as I did in the past - - that's definately useful
advise... thanks.)

--- Also an external firewire or USB 2.0 DVD burner
works for 4.3Gb transfers. :-D.
