Feb. 19 - The Goldfish crackers were the giveaway. A friend had told
me about a vast makeshift dump north of Baghdad where U.S. occupation
forces and battalions of American contractors ship their garbage. I
thought it might give me an interesting glimpse behind the blast walls
where these folks live, but there was a sandstorm blowing like the
opening scene of "The Exorcist," and at first I had trouble bringing
the putrid landscape into focus.
