George Takei, Mr. Sulu of 'Star Trek' fame, comes out
Actor likens prejudice against gays to racial segregation
LOS ANGELES (AP) | Oct 27, 8:47 PM
Actor George Takei, best known for his role as Mr. Hikaru Sulu in "Star
Trek," came out as homosexual in the current issue of Frontiers, a
biweekly Los Angeles magazine covering the gay and lesbian community.
Takei told The Associated Press on Thursday that his new onstage role as
psychologist Martin Dysart in "Equus," helped inspire him to publicly
discuss his sexuality. Takei described the character as a "very
contained but turbulently frustrated man." The play opened Wednesday at
the David Henry Hwang Theater in Los Angeles, the same day that
Frontiers magazine featured a story on Takei's coming out.
The current social and political climate also motivated Takei's
disclosure, he said.
"The world has changed from when I was a young teen feeling ashamed for
being gay," he said. "The issue of gay marriage is now a political
issue. That would have been unthinkable when I was young."
The 68-year-old actor said he considers himself as "having been out for
quite some time." Takei and his partner, Brad Altman, have been together
for 18 years.

Indeed I was, but intentionally: I always thought they made a nice

out it would be only natural when he claims it first.

People care because gay rights issues keep coming to the front and center of
national attention. Takei has been a role model for more than 40 years for
being one of the first educated, high profile Asian character on television
and for being part of the very first integrated ensemble cast on television.
His coming out publicly has made many people stop and rethink what they feel
about gay people.

tolerant people, people who respect the privacy of others and expect
others to respect their own privacy don't care at all. And the self-

Could be. It seems though that celebrity 'coming outs' are not exactly
novel and they have been happening for years. Perhaps it's a sign that
in spite of the fundies and our government, we are becoming a more
tolerant nation, which is good.

This is highly ironic.
I'm sure everybody here knows about "fan fiction" where fans of
TV shows and movies write their own stories. One genre of fan
fiction is "slash" (homosexual stories) and the term originated
from all the Kirk/Spock pairings....
Star Trek had the first "interracial" kiss on TV plus other
milestones, now this. Cool, although I never suspected Takei
of being gay.

Huh. White guy; black woman. Big deal.
Doing it *the other way around* would have been something!

You're probably forgetting that the Kirk/Uhura scene was on TV about
the same time as "Guess Who's Coming To Dinner?" was in theatres.
They truly were breaking a barrier.

Mr. Takei is correct, and good for him for coming out. :)

Warp factor 9 to 'Uranus' Mr. Sulu. Hopefully there's no Klingons there.
