Our machines were chosen by our leaders.
For years, they've had their computers doing most of the thinking for
most of us workers, to cheapen our jobs. Unfortunately, that results
in micro management by people who do not know how to manage, then they
blame failure on us who did what we were told but to an unfortunate
result. So much is done to cover managements errors that if the same
effort went into tapping into each workers talent we'd be OK. But no,
everything's money, now, over human life, even.

How 'bout if all of us voters filled out absentee ballots, refusing to
use the Diebolds?
Hell, I'd paint my vote on the side of the booth rather than use a
computer.
Knowing what I've been able to do with imaginagtive software while
limiting myself to innocent jokes, I know it'd be easy to pipe the
real vote thru a wheel into a cage and register a logically sound
victory for whomever hired me, especially if the only way to quit the
job was in a coffin. Yep, that's happened, ususlly small airplanes, or
spontaneous suicide. Or something that goes away.

I have no problem with electronic voting in general, it's just Diebold
machines that are a threat to democracy. As long as they have
appropriate security and a paper trail.
Ideally, the hardware schematics AND the software sourcecode should be
freely displayable to the public. They should ABSOLUTELY be accessable
to government officials.

Only problem with that is if it isn't Diebold, it'll be someone else,
and the computer that I saw demonstrated could stand up to public
inspection and still steal votes. That's because the only thing
between the voters input and the printed tally is software that can
easily be tampered with. At least the old monstrosities with all those
mechanical levers could be understood by the average mechanic. Voters
seem to have no problem working them, either. We're not trying to
invent a faster space ship here, what the hell is wrong with those old
mechanical voting booths that have always worked so well in the past?

The Diebold machines can be understood by the average systems analyst.
Just mandate that the firmware (and schematics) be open source, and
spot-check machines to make sure that the firmware posted is the
firmware in the machine. It's a 10 second process.
The reason some software is just about bulletproof is that it *IS*
open source - meaning that thousands of pairs of eyes have checked it
for bugs. Those who have nothing to hide have nothing to fear.

Voters seem to have no problem working them, either. We're not trying to
invent a faster space ship here, what the hell is wrong with those old
mechanical voting booths that have always worked so well in the past?

It's more difficult to steal the election with them.

My mother used to say "Vote the incumbents out every time. They'll get
the message right quick." I agree with this, especially now. I don't
think our founding fathers ever thought political office should be a
career. To them, it was like jury duty. A civic duty you performed
for six years and then when you were done, you went back to your farm
and let somebody else have the headache.
These people need to know that there is no such thing as job security.
They need to lose their jobs each and every time they run as an
incumbent so they pay more attention to actually doing what they were
elected to do rather than trying to pander to just enough of the
"right" people in order to win the next election.

From now on, even politicians I think are doing a good job are not

getting my re-election vote. New kids always try harder to please. If
things changed and every one of them knew that no matter how much money
they spent or how long they campaigned they'd be out of a job come
election time, they might just spend a little less time worrying about
it and actually get some work done.
Fuckin' pork-swilling, special-interest-pandering, lazy-*****,
money-grubbing bums!
