Top Republican legislators are working on a plan that would require
Colorado colleges and universities to seek more conservatives in
faculty hiring, more classics in the curriculum and more "intellectual
pluralism" among campus speakers.

More or less. It's actually worse than that. The wording of
the bill specifically bans the implementation of quotas or anything even
vaguely similar. What's more alarming about the last draft of the bill
is that it extends "academic freedom" to the students in such a way that
a Creationist would have solid grounds for protesting a professor who
dismisses discussion of Intelligent Design, or gives a polisci student
room to sue if his anti-abortion screed is marked down on the grounds
that the professor was grading its political content, not its "academic
value."

Goody. Let's destroy what remains of our education system. Then we can
become a third world country even *faster!

More like "Employment for the Unqualified".

shall be indifferent as to what your neighbor's religion is." Not merely tolerant of it,
but indifferent to it. Divinity is claimed for many religions; but no religion is great
enough or divine enough to add that new law to its code."

Top Republican legislators are working on a plan that would require
Colorado colleges and universities to seek more conservatives in

Virtually impossible to implement Constitutionally. My constant
query: are they also going to require the business and engineering
departments to hire more liberals? Fair is fair.
And what the hell are Republicans doing promoting affirmative
action? I guess it's only bad when the opposition does it,
like having affairs with staffers.

more classics in the curriculum

Surveys of course offerings show that the classics are still
offered virtually everywhere, but are not necessarily mandatory,
and that there is much more variety offered in literature and other
courses than before. It is very hard to strike the right balance:
certainly we need to teach the acknowledged great works of Western civ,
but at the same time we should not ignore the fact that people have
continued writing, thinking, composing, painting, and sculpting,
and sometimes have something interesting and valid to offer.
Nor should we ignore the fact that most of the world's population is not
in Europe or North America, and that they have art, literature
and philosophy, too.
Faculties at universities all over the world wrestle with this problem,
and there is probably no perfect solution. Best of luck to a state
legislature trying to solve it.
(I'd be really interested to take a survey among these guys and see
how many have attended a Shakespeare production or the opera,
or visited an art museum recently.)

and more "intellectual
pluralism" among campus speakers.

Possibly the only valid grounds they have for complaint, at least
on some campuses. And yes, I agree that speakers invited to
campus should represent a broad range of viewpoints, including
viewpoints that I despise.
The First Amendment does not guarantee that we will never hear anything
that offends us. On the other hand, the First Amendment doesn't
protect the speakers from leaflets, picket signs and probing
questions at the Q&A after the lecture, either.
Best, Marc
