Giant rodent astonishes science
By Jonathan Amos

The fossil remains of a gigantic rodent that looked something like a
monster guinea pig have been identified by scientists in Venezuela.
The 700-kilogram beast - about the size of a buffalo - lived among the
reeds and grasses of an ancient river system that threaded its way into
the Caribbean Sea eight million years ago.
Researchers think the creature, which was 10 times as big as today's
largest rodents, could have run in huge packs.

More likely it's related to tapirs and other herbivores
in South America than rodents, or perhaps they had a
common ancestor. Some existing animals weigh 200kg or so.
On a related note, a recent Dicovery channel documentary
mentioned the ancestor of the beaver being over 300kg....

Capybara , mammal of Central and much of South America. It
is the largest living member of the order Rodentia (the
rodents) reaching a length of 4 ft (120 cm) and a weight
of 75 to 100 lb (34–45 kg). Its brownish hair flecked with
yellow is coarse and scanty, and its tail rudimentary. The
feet are partially webbed, and there are four thick-nailed
toes on the front feet and three on the hind feet. The
capybara is an expert swimmer and diver. It eats vegetation
and sometimes damages crops. It is hunted for food, its
hide is made into gloves, and its bristles are used in
brushes. It is also called water hog and carpincho.
Capybaras are classified in the phylum Chordata, subphylum
Vertebrata, class Mammalia, order Rodentia, family
Hydrochoeridae.

A 7 foot tall 1500 lb rodent? Ran in "huge packs"? Please tell me that
they were exclusively herbivores. On the other hand, I'd be more
afraid of the giant crocodiles that the article mentioned preyed on
them. One report on the radio today claimed that the crocs got up to
30 ft. in length. Now that's a croc! I'd like to see 'Croc Boy' tackle
one of those. :-)

I found the following a bit strange:
From:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/3120950.stm
"And they also have a huge size range - the capybara may be 10,000
times larger than the pygmy gerboa."
How big is a pygmy gerboa? If it were only an inch long, does this
mean that the capybara is 10,000 inches long?

The fossil remains of a gigantic rodent that looked something like a
monster guinea pig have been identified by scientists in Venezuela.
The 700-kilogram beast - about the size of a buffalo - lived among
the reeds and grasses of an ancient river system that threaded its
way into the Caribbean Sea eight million years ago.
Researchers think the creature, which was 10 times as big as today's
largest rodents, could have run in huge packs. </excerpt>

"And they also have a huge size range - the capybara may be 10,000
times larger than the pygmy gerboa."
How big is a pygmy gerboa? If it were only an inch long, does this
mean that the capybara is 10,000 inches long?
They probably mean by weight (scales as the cube of length).

That sounds reasonable. I looked it up. An adult capybara can weigh as
much as 45 kg (100 lbs). If the pygmy gerboa weighs 4.5 - 5 gm, it
fits. (I couldn't find a weight for pygmy gerboa, or gerbil, but some
shrews can weigh as little as 3.5 gm.)

"Larger" probably means volume or weight, not 10,000 times the size in
all dimensions.
So, if a pygmy gerboa weighs 2 grams, the capybara would weigh 20
kilograms, which is much more reasonable.
