Object: OT: Harmless Thread Attempt! What would you do if you won the lottery?
So you've won, say, 35 million dollars, or say 20 million pounds. What
would you do with it? Besides open several branches of the EAC, of
course?
Me? I really don't know. I suppose I'd distribute some of it around
the family, take a long and expensive holiday, probably China (though
I'd love to see that city in Syria .. what's it called ... ah, Jordan,
the city of Petra. After that? Dunno, though I feel several well
funded and amusing hoaxes might develop.... Something along the lines
of "The Society for the Realisation of Urban Legends" might do it...
And you?

I would..pay the parent's bills, the kids bills...and if there was anything

Oh, you know...the old lady who dictates silly rules and has favorite
students and insists upon doilies covering the chair arms in the teacher's

A reporter was looking for filler and decided to do a short piece on
the lottery. He went into a convenience store and saw two farmers
standing in line buy tickets. He walked up to them and asked the older
fella "What would you do if you win this lottery?"
The old farmer replied "Well... I reckon I'd retire, of course. Put
the money in funds for the kids. Give some to the church. Fix the
truck. That sort of thing."
"What would you do, if you won? he asked the younger farmer.
"Heck, I'm not old enough to retire," he replied. "I guess I'd just
keep farming 'til the money ran out..."
*******
Me, I'd give notice at work. Spread a little around the family, of
course. Open up a martial arts school. Take classes again in the local
junior college - catch up on my math - then probably get a degree in
computer science. Get my knee stabilized, see if my eyes can be made
20/20 - I want to be able to wear those way-cool sunglasses. Being
blind as a bat, my current sunglass options are limited. Hire someone
to ride around the rest of the summer with my daughter while she
practices driving, at *least until she gets her license.
Someone with nerves of steel.

Of course, first I'd pay off debts and make sure my parents were taken care
of, help out any friends who needed it.
I'd fund my two Big Ideas that I tried to get started into a business over
the past couple of years. Then I'd get rid of most of my possessions and
store what was left in a little bungalow I'd buy by the sea. Then I'd buy
some kind of 30 foot or so seafaring sailboat. Then I'd buy lessons to learn
how to sail the darn thing, and subsequently sail around the world.
I'd also probably buy some big piece of undeveloped land in my city and
arrange to leave it undeveloped in perpetuity. I'd make a scholarship for
red-haired girls who know how to drive a stick (i.e., a car with a manual
transmission). I'd make some kind of trust to fund harebrained business
schemes requiring under $250000 of financing.
After all that I think there would still be a lot left over, and time to
ponder what to do with it.

And you?

Oh, I almost forgot! I would hire someone to figure out how to not pay
taxes!

I assume that the money is after taxes... euros will be about 33...?
First of all I'll want to buy some land (say, 15 hectares) somewhere
by a small river and have a nice house built on it. Most of the ground
will be nature. I have pretty definite ideas about what it should look
like, but I won't bore you with them. This will cost about 5 million
euros. I will want to be able to produce my own energy, so the price
might even go up. Other than that, I'll need apartments in Amsterdam
and Berlin, that will be another 3 million. Leaves us with about 25
million euros. I'll need 1 million for buying cars, goods and gifts
and traveling. 7 in various accounts and investments and 2 for giving
away to charity.
The remaining money is for starting businesses that will go bankrupt.
I always wanted to run a liquor store, or a record store and a label,
or a disco. Of course hybrids & combinations are the way to go, these
days, so we'll mix it. I think I'll call it liquid ambrosia or
something <checks google> hmm, only in the description of products,
lots of things called ambrosia, though, but that's no problem. So
we'll have a daytime record annex liquor store, I think I'll go with a
labels concept, to get some kind of continuity. Between 20:00 and
22:00 we'll turn the place into an electro bar with a DJ and pour the
drinks of the gods (DOM Benedictine and Barbar, plus every imaginable
cocktail) all night.
I want to get a piece of the upcoming hydrogen business, but 15
million is probably not enough money to do anything significant there.
If I could I would start some business selling home installations for
producing hydrogen, but well, someone has to start making them first.

Pay off my mortgage, then rent the house for really cheap to some slobs

Buy a new house somewhere distant, where my closest neighbor is ten miles

Buy a Honda Goldwing and tour the States with my wife looking for the
