It is unfortunate that I was never old enough to see his show.

Goodnight Johnny!

I'm not even sure if the actual shows were broadcast here in Oz, but for
years they played "Carson's Comedy Classics" late at night...the best bits
from the 30 years of the show. One of the joys of my ill spent 20s was
coming home with friends at 2am and watching the classic comedy. It's the
kind of stuff you study to learn from when you do stand up! He was a
genius!

There are tapes and CDs, but the ambiance wouldn't be the same.
Knowing that one had to be ready to turn on the TV by 11:30 (or
whatever the local start time was). Feeling foolish for having missed
last night's monolog. That sort of thing.
Something like not missing this week's episode of The Fugitive.

Or for some of us, begging to stay up to just watch the monolouge. Then
being tickled when you were old enough and didn't have to beg to stay up
to watch the monologue.
And Ed MacMahon. That's a big part of my life, The Tonight Show.
And Clayton, I dunno about here, cause TGHO says he's never seen it.
Too bad!

I know that Ed Sullivan's show was always shown here (a week or two after it
was broadcast in the US) and Carson was well known, but I only ever saw the
"best of" type shows myself...but there were hundreds of those.

I always think of that when I pass the Slosson Avenue exit on the
