OT: HOPE in Atlanta Georgia Desegregation |

My father was involved in an organization called HOPE in Atlanta Georgia
that sought to keep the state from closing the schools to avoid
desegregation. The governor at the time had declared his intention to do
so. I was going to talk to my daughter about our history
during this turbulent period since she was discussing it a bit surrounding
the death of Rosa Parks. I wanted to put in the perspective of somebody
she knows, my parents. Unfortunately, it has been around fifty years and
my parents don't even remember much about what was happening. :-) This
will probably happen to all of us, so don't laugh.
The organization they worked for was called HOPE, but my parents don't
remember what that acronym stood for. The young Republicans were running
it for the most from what I understand, but they were not endorsed by the
Republican party at the time. The major party players were openly against
HOPE in trying to keep the schools open (and therefore desegregate them).
My parents do not remember the names of those involved. The governor at
the time was a Democrat (again, unknown name). Apparently they had some
large money supporters, but also a number of people who could only
contribute one dollar.
Can anyone fill in the story here?
Thanks,

On another note related to this topic, my father grew up in North
Carolina. At the time the town in which he grew up had four separate
schools, the white schools, the black school, the Indian school, and the
smiley (sp?) school for kids the Indians said were black and blacks said
were Indian. The term Smiley may have been a derogatory term, but it was
the term used at the time. Does anybody know any source where I can read
about this?
Thanks again,

Is there a good newsgroup where this thread would be on-topic and where
I'm likely to find good pointers?
Thanks.
