Oh how are the mighty fallen. It seems only yesterday that Larry Page,
co-founder of Google, was explaining (in the preface to the IPO
prospectus) that the search engine would be a different kind of outfit
from lesser corporates. 'Many companies,' he wrote, 'are under pressure
to keep their earnings in line with analysts' forecasts. Therefore,
they often accept smaller, but predictable, earnings rather than larger
and more unpredictable returns. Sergey [Brin - his fellow co-founder]
and I feel this is harmful, and we intend to steer in the opposite
direction.'
