Very scary! Years ago, when I could afford to play (before I got
married - obviously), I brought a Cessna down in a crosswind. That was
at least a steady wind - not gusty like this one - , but it was still
odd making the final approach at 45 degrees to the runway with the
window frame right in the line of sight. I had an instructor with me
that time, or I would have been peeing myself.

Actually, the instructor was a she - probably on the same principle as
having young girls as dental nurses, so a grown man is too busy
looking tough to give vent to manly terror :-)

I fly a Decathlon, which is a taildragger, which are notorious for
being difficult to land in a crosswind. They can groundloop on ya. I
had to land in a gusty, squirrelly, crosswind a few times. Didn't wet
my pants but I was sweating pretty good and breathing pretty hard.
Under those conditions I like to say you don't land the plane, you
wrestle it to the ground.

Often had that trouble, without much wind. One grass strip, where I
flew, was on a distinct slope. Landing downhill was
always......entertaining!

I have repeated this in a flight simulator.
It seemed to help if the flaps were not set on "full".
Dunno why.
