Voter alienation will not stop at voting booths in California

Oct. 7 — It would be nice to think that the ending of Election Day
here will bring peace to the politics of California, and to the
country. It would be nice, but wrong. Don't expect an end to partisan
rancor, voter anger and alienation, here or elsewhere. This state's
political warfare will resume long before Governor-elect Arnold
Schwarzenegger actually takes office. And the same forces that are
shaking Sacramento could materialize on the doorstep of the house at
1600 Pennsylvania Ave.

Oct. 15 — In 1921, a Sicilian playwright named Luigi Pirandello wrote
an avant garde drama in which six characters wander onto the stage,
searching for the identity and plot that their unseen creator/author
had failed to give them. If Pirandello wasn't long dead, I'd think
he'd scripted this Democratic presidential race. It will take shape
eventually, but right now it looks like "Six Characters in Search of a
Campaign"-a formless void in desperate need of a Creator.
