It seems to me that people make up visions or images of their
holy people or wise men or national heros in the same skin
color that is most popular in the area.. I've seen black mary
and jesus artwork, as well as white mary and jesus artwork.
Which are historically correct, if any?

Jesus of Nazareth....would have a problem getting on an airplane nowadays.
He was a native son of the middle east..probably black hair, brown eyes,
dark complected (not negroid, but certainly brown).
But you are quite correct, people tend to adopt Him into their own ethnic
profiles. So the celts would have Him blonde and blue eyed (or at least
brown/blue), those of African native descent would have Him black, those of
Polynesian descent have Him looking like a Maori...(shrug) It's natural
enough.

If he was wearing his standard white robe and sandals, he might
actually have less of a problem, don't you think? Can one hide a shoe
bomb in a pair of bare feet or some simple sandals?

Interesting how the Bible never gives a detailed description of what

What do most Mormons believe about the skin color of Moses,
if anything?
Was he darker or lighter than Jesus?
Apparently the Egyptians didn't seem to see Moses as some sort
of oddity based on his skin color, so he must have been the same
color as them at the time, don't you think?

bare feet, no....but He would have been taken aside for special treatment.

No...except for the bit about Him being on the plain side...but then
literature of that time period didn't often actually describe people.
Unless of course you were Suetonius...but that's beside the point.
The reason I believe that Jesus looked as I described Him is because of His
ancestry and probability.

I wasn't aware that the Egyptians at the time had a whole lot of trouble
with skin color as a divider of races.
It doesn't seem to have cropped up much in the literature.

Diana

I keep wondering why people need to rate others by finding fault in
their skin color, ethnicity, clothing and, yes, religion or lack
thereof.
I know that bias is part of society and passed down.
I don't know why I never understood it, and I can remember in my
elementary school days, ( the 1950's) the other kids would make a big
thing about whether someone was Italian, Irish, English, Catholic etc
- and none of it made sense to me. Maybe because I didn't give a damn
about it - I simply got along with the few people that got along with
me.
Of course being exposed to it so much at a young age began having an
effect but I still sensed it wasn't right, I had my few bigoted years
and it never felt right.
When I got my job in 1970 with a large corporation, I got the
opportunity to work with and work for all kinds of people - old,
young, various colors, religions origins etc. Guess what I found out?
Most people were honest workers, good at what they did. A few were
absolute skumbuckets, goofed off, and were determined to beat the
system. The surprise is that there was no pattern of ethnicity age and
sex: I found that good honest hard working people existed in every
color, sex, ethnicity and religion. And each sector of society had
their bad people too.
So I judge by how people act toward me and whether they accept me.
I hate only bigots. Does that make me one?

Actually, I've never been "normal" from infancy, got razzed about it
throughout school but my parents were very supportive. And I found a
good job that my "outside the box" style of thinking helps me to be
very good at.
I'm thankful they didn't have Ritilin in the '50's or, if they did, my
parents couldn't afford it.

Are you sure about that?

Yep. "Niggard" comes from "nig" plus "Ard",
"Nig" comes from the Scandanavian Hnoggr, Norwegian Nogg, Sweddish njugg,
....all adjectives meaning "parsimonious, stingy'.
"ard" is from the early German suffix making a word a name; a personal name,
usually, like 'Everard", "Raynard" and so forth.
If you want the full OED etymology I'll post it.
The fact that it sounds like something else is a coincidence and nothing
else. The words doen't even come from the same language trees!

I'm perfectly willing to abandon my current belief that *****

"*****" comes from the Latin "niger"....meaning black...
(and this one is funny in the OED....it goes on to examine the etymology of
the word 'nigga' as a positive evolution from '*****', the way that
'gangsta' is a drifting away from 'gangster' in new dialectic forms)

As do I. One of the stupidest things to come out of that incident was
that some people said that even though the word wasn't racist, per se,
