Weatherman Fired for On-Air MLK Slur
Monday, January 17, 2005
LAS VEGAS - A weekend television weatherman was fired after he made an
on-air
racial slur about Martin Luther King Jr. (search), station officials said.
Rob Blair (search) of KTNV-TV was delivering the extended forecast Saturday
morning when he said: "For tomorrow, 60 degrees, Martin Luther Coon King Jr.
Day, gonna see some temperatures in the mid-60s."
Jim Prather (search), vice president and general manager of the ABC
affiliate,
said Blair stumbled but the excuse was not enough to save his job.
"This kind of incident is not acceptable under any circumstances, and I'm
truly
sorry that this event occurred," Prather told the Las Vegas Review-Journal.
Blair apologized during the station's 6 p.m. and 11 p.m. Saturday newscasts.
"On a weather report earlier this morning, I made an accidental slip of the
tongue when talking about the Martin Luther King holiday, and what I said
was
interpreted by many viewers as highly offensive. For that I offer my deepest
apology. I in no way intended to offend anyone. I'm very sorry."
Blair worked at the station for about three months. He declined comment
Monday
when contacted by The Associated Press through a friend.

Interpreted? How the hell else could you interpret a statement like that? I
know. I should ask him, but still.

Blair unrepentantly and casually bore false witness. He's not worried
based on Matt 12:30 since he didn't say anything bad about the 'holey
spook.' (but then 'Jesus' lies and it is good).

There is one valid excuse that I can think of: Tourette's syndrome, with
copralalia. (sp?) But anyone with that condition really needs to be
working somewhere other than on live TV.

I was wondering how else you could interpret it. He was making a "rational,"
(quotes denote irony) non-Tourette's induced statment above. I'll believe him
that he didn't "intend" to offend anyone, but I'm curious to know what the hell
he thought he was doing?

I've heard it before, he probably has as well.
It could be something that was stuck in the back of his mind from
hearing it and something that he found offensive when he heard it.
I have trouble believing he would have threatened his career by saying
it intentionally.
Maybe he was tired and something he would never have said or agreed
with slipped out.
