OT: I got broadband at home! |
I have finally got broadband internet at home.
256k ADSL - it rocks!
I should start posting more regularly than I have been for the past few
months (who noticed?) now as my new ISP has news server.
Google is good as a emergency backup but is a pain to use for serious
news group participation.
(I spent 2 hours typing a reply to some guy just to have it disapeer on
me with a "server error" message!)
With a newsreader you compose offline so there is no chance of that
happening.
For those interested I have made a minor update to the Septic (Skeptic)

at
http://www.alt-atheism.org/faqs/skeptic.php
I have added a shorter link to Goldhammers "Septics real identity"

You should try Verizon's FIOS (aka FTTP) 15 Mbits down and 3 Mb up.

There is no such distance limitation with FTTP/FIOS. FTTP means Fiber To
The Premises.
Cable TV, 4 phone lines, and internet all on one bit of fiber to your
residence. You have your choice of 5, 15, or 30 Mbit with a maximum
bandwidth of 300Mbit. It is capped at 30 Mbit. So if someone comes up
with something like a new cable modem that does 30Mbit, they can up the
speed to a maximum of 300Mbit.

Wow!
I am in Australia and the best you can buy is 1.5Mbits - but I had a
hard time getting my wife (i.e. "she who must be obeyed!" 8-) ) to go
for the next-to-cheapest option.
She worries we need money for trivial stuff like food and paying of the
mortgage.\Sheesh!
How much a month do you pay for this 15Mbits monster and how many
things actually move that fast anyway?
(even with 256kbit - some stuff - say downloading ZoneAlarm last night
came through at 80kbit per second )

I actually get 15 Mbit to a variety of sites. For example I live in Texas
and can get 15 Mbits from Argonne Nat'l labs in Illinois. Cost is $49.00 per
month for 15 Mbit. 30 Mbit is a whopping $199.00 per month. 5 Mbit is $39
per month.
The disadvantage is that a T1 or DS1 is slow in comparison now. This may
make dedicated lines obsolete.
Zone alarm is too small to get any timings from. It was over as soon as I
clicked Save.

Ahh, I haven't tried that. It's nice, though, when someone posts a link to
a media file - picture, mp3, movie - not to have to worry about spending an
hour downloading it. My ISP just set us up with Giganews. I've seen
download speeds as fast as 500 kb/sec. I downloaded a CD in under 3
minutes!
