[OT] "I just got back from a FEMA Detainment Camp" |
http://www.abovetopsecret.com/forum/thread167902/pg1
One of our members reports on a recent trip to one of the Katrina FEMA
refugee camps, she was delivering clothing and some foodstock.
Including some photos.
"We lugged our sacks of clothes back down the stairs. Then we got the
first negative message. "You can't bring any clothes in. FEMA has
stated they will accept no more clothes. They've had 30 people sorting
clothes for days. They don't want anymore." My mind couldn't help but
go back over the news articles that have accused FEMA of refusing water
in to Jefferson Parrish, or turning fuel away.
[...]
had gone all out with fresh vegetables, fruits, canned goods, breakfast
cereals, rice, and pancake fixings. That's when we got the next
message: They will not be able to use the kitchen.
Excuse me? I asked incredulously.
FEMA will not allow any of the kitchen facilities in any of the cabins
to be used by the occupants due to fire hazards. FEMA will deliver
meals to the cabins. The refugees will be given two meals per day by
FEMA. They will not be able to cook. In fact, the "host" goes on to
explain, some churches had already enquired about whether they could
come in on weekends and fix meals for the people staying in their
cabin. FEMA won't allow it because there could be a situation where one
cabin gets steaks and another gets hot dogs - and... it could cause a
riot.
[...]
He then precedes to tell us that some churches had already enquired
into whether they could send a van or bus on Sundays to pick up any
occupants of their cabins who might be interested in attending church.
FEMA will not allow this. The occupants of the camp cannot leave the
camp for any reason. If they leave the camp they may never return. They
will be issued FEMA identification cards and "a sum of money" and they
will remain within the camp for the next 5 months.
[...]
But he tells my mother she must take all the breakfast cereal back. My
mother protests that cereal requires no cooking. "There will be no
milk, ma'am." My mother points to the huge industrial double-wide
refrigerator the church had just purchased in the past year. "Ma'am,
you don't understand...
It could cause a riot.'
More on the link and a discussion with the member also. Really
incredible, horrible mismanagement from a Managment agency.

Welcome to Martial Law!
Meals ready to eat, and guards with cards. Cards that
say "allow this only" after that start shooting.

About 250 families were relocated to OKLAHOMA. They were given
apartments and their children entered in school. This is in sharp
contrast to the way others were treated. FEMA failed to mistreat the
folks in OKLAHOMA.

There are bound to be mistakes. Fortunately, this one seems to be
localized.

I think I now understand. Current GOP ideology is that
government _can't_ do anything good. Therefore, it is the
job of the President to carefully weigh his appointments
to make _damned certain_ that the feds will do _nothing_
of any value during his watch. Anything less would be a
failure of zealous attention to doctrine -- might even
smack of heresy.

You beat me to it. Some have said this is the reasoning behind No Child Left
Behind also. The idea is to cripple government at every level so that the
GOP can then prove to the People that government is bad and that it isn't
the kind of thing you want to have around. The subsequent popular demand to
dismantle the government will create the illusion of libertarian anarchy,
whereas in fact there will rise up a defacto oligarchy, where giant
corporations rule the world unfettered by the will of the People.

"rise up?" Do you perhaps mean "finally show themselves in public"?

I'm getting the feeling this is the next step in "corporatism":
deliberately render government agencies to be so incompetent
and useless that large corporations have to take over out of
necessity. "Corporate America" is no longer a term for the
stock exchange or businesses, but the de facto government.

Personal account from a journalist blog
http://blueowlsix.blogspot.com/2005/09/welcome-to-rockies-now-get-behind.html\
Welcome to the Rockies, now get behind the fence!
I was afraid of this. As the great diaspora of New Orleans continues
with evacuees not being told where they're going until the bus/plane
cranks up or until they land/arrive, the police state tactics of some
of the 'welcoming' communities are actually just housing people at
remote locations, behind fences - like prisons, really. Look at the
photo of the two women - Verne Stovall and Jacquelyn Augustine - at
the right. According to a report in the Denver Post today, headlined
"Evacuees stories moving, but fence isn't," written by Post columnist
Diane Carman, really shocked me with her opening paragraphs:
--BEGIN--
If I didn't know better, I'd have thought I was peering through the
fence at a concentration camp.
The signs on the buildings say "Community College of Aurora," though
for now they're serving as an impromptu Camp Katrina. About 160
hurricane survivors are being housed in the dorms, surrounded by
fences, roadblocks, security guards and enough armed police officers
to invade Grenada.
There's a credentials unit to process every visitor, an intake unit to
provide identification tags and a bag of clothes to every evacuee,
several Salvation Army food stations, portable toilets, shuttle buses,
a green army-tent chapel with church services three times a day and a
communications team to keep reporters as far away from actual news as
possible.
It probably was easier for a reporter to get inside Gitmo on Tuesday
than to penetrate the force field around Lowry.
--END--
I mean if you read the story, the evacuees are very thankful for being
safe and in a new place. Still, do we want to treat fellow Americans
like this? And why so far away in Colorado? One woman says she's never
even been outside of New Orleans and that's a pretty common thing
among New Orleans' poorer residents.
I saw a report yesterday where evacuees were put on a plane and not
told they were heading for Salt Lake City, Utah until they began
taxi-ing down the runway. And then there is that report I have noted
in recent days of the 1,000 evacuees flown to Roosevelt Roads naval
base on Puerto Rico's eastern tip. What of them? I've still seen no
reports, but I confirmed it with a Puerto Rican friend of mine. This
is too surreal. As for forcing Americans into a fenced-in camp? I
don't like it. Not one bit.
