OT: I'm Sorry |
Time to swallow some pride.
Again...
....and again, and again, and again.... Haven't I been here before?
:-? It sure feels like it. What a wretched little pill pride is to
swallow.
I exploded a few days ago in response to the replies and non-replies
to my post about having a child. I'm sorry. It was arrogant, rude
and completely inappropriate. Such used to be my modus operandi, a
behavioral trait infused into my persona by both genetics (I suspect)
and religious upbringing (of this I'm certain). Some long-time
posters may remember my more tempestuous "younger" years - always
bitching about something or making mountains out of mole hills, etc...
etc... etc... (still not entirely past that stage - maybe it's a "Y"
thang...). The blast I posted in the 'Bye' thread was really rather
'gentle' compared to some of my earlier tirades, I'm ashamed to admit.
I don't explode like that nearly as often now as I used to, though. I
was just in the wrong state of mind at the wrong time reading the
wrong thing and interpreting it the wrong way. When all is said and
done, I screwed up. The posters I blasted made legitimate points, and
I'm sorry for reacting to them as I did.
I don't know if this next paragraph is going to make sense to anyone
other than me, but I've been contemplating fatherhood for about two
months now. During that time, I've done what I'm sure billions of
people before me have done - hoped, dreamed, wished, fantasized,
speculated, pondered and fretted. Unfortunately, that's what led to
my reaction. I was so enmeshed with the idea of having a child, that
to some part of my psyche, it's as if I already _have_ one. Whenever
I read an opinion that I shouldn't try to reproduce, it triggered a
very gut-level response because my "child" is already "alive and well"
in my own mind at the moment. It felt almost exactly as if I were
reading a suggestion to murder my own child by not having it. I had
no idea that "parental instinct" could even exist in someone without a
child, let alone exist so forcefully.
Have any of you ever literally _mourned_ for a child you never
actually had? Not that I think my outburst should be seen as
'justified' - it most certainly wasn't - I just want to know if anyone
can understand what kinds of emotions I'm going through with this
issue.
I've never been a physically or sexually abusive person, but one thing
"The Church(TM)" taught me was how to emotionally manipulate and abuse
people. That's a legacy I'm not sure I'll ever _completely_ be able
to overcome. But I am trying, and I really want to, so I'm sure some
improvement will occur along the way.
If anyone is concerned for the welfare of a future child, don't be. I
know my faults and most of my inadequacies. In case I didn't mention
it before, I'm giving myself until I'm 40 to become fit for parenthood
(though I'm going to try earlier). If I can't make the transformation
in that amount of time, I'll throw in the towel. I'll be asking
around for opinions on various things among those who know me so that
I can gauge my "parental fitness level", so it's not going to be just
my opinion that tells me I'm ready. If I end up being the only one
who thinks I'm ready for parenthood - and I mean after getting a LOT
of trustworthy input on the matter - I won't do it, because other
people see a side to me that I, myself, cannot see. If I *do* become
fit to be a parent, I'm contemplating adoption. There are plenty of
deaf children who need understanding homes, and I understand them.
The "legacy" I'd like to leave for the future isn't necessarily all
about genes, so for me to be a parent might or might not mean another
child will be born into the world (which was one of the issues touched
upon by one of the posters I blasted - sorry...). I haven't made up
my mind. But I've got 8 years, so there's no rush.
And again, I'm sorry. The feelings brought on by this issue are
feelings I've never experienced before. It's a bit awkward trying to
figure out how to handle them, and this past week, I didn't handle
them so well. Please forgive me. 'Bye' was basically a minor
"nervous breakdown" that just happened to take place on Usenet. :-/

I didn't see the original thread but I usually read your posts.
Glad your feeling better and are back.
Good luck with sorting our the parenthood issue.

Time to swallow some pride.
Go stand in the corner and think about things, young man.
By the way, I'm trying to make the same kind of decision at the moment, with
the added twist that, although I will be part of the child's life, I won't
have legal custody. It's not a decision other people can help you make.
They can make suggestions and point things out to you, but in the end you
are trying to guess what the entire life of someone else who doesn't exist
yet will be like, with as much accuracy as possible. It's basically
impossible. You can't plan what you will do in a crisis...all you can do is
hope that you have the skills to think on your feet and handle any situation
that comes up as well as you can when it happens. So the first decision you
have to make is "do you and the mother have the capacity to do that?" After
that the decision whether to have the bub or not becomes easier...not
easy...but easier. I'm still weighing up that decision so I can't claim any
expertise...I'm just doing the best I can.

Twern't nuthin'. What's usenet for, if not for a good rant once in a
while.
Kinda figured you'd take a few deep breaths and come on back eventually.
You were obviously dealing with stuff that didn't have a ton to do with
us.
By the way, I was serious when I suggested therapy. Might help you to
excise the demons of your past, help you channel and deal with the anger
and help you see the self-worth that we already know is there. Mine is
very affirming. I do recommend it.

Okay, it's a done deal. I have replied to the following statements,
but it should be taken to be "in general" and not regarding any of the
specific afore-mentioned issues.
The whole damned thing regarding Terry Schiavo was a he said she said
bunch of *****.
Once the politics kicked in the truth made a break for it to maintain

Not at all. But if a Catholic says, "Love thy neighbor as thyself
because it says so in Leviticus," then yes, it _is_ less wise.
And imo the reason a.a. drives you crazy is because there is so damned
much closed minded ***** posted by people who pride themselves to a
fault on being rational and open minded.
I have to count myself among them on far too many occasions to truly
be able to condemn anyone for that. And I do condemn them for that.
And I'm being a hypocrite when I do.
You know, it truly _sucks_ when you're so completely willing to open
your eyes up to your own faults. ;-) I almost wish I could lie to
myself again, like I did when I was still a Christian. :-# But
darkness cannot be "undispelled", so I trudge on bathed by such
painful light. :-(
(Sorry, I just wrote an archaic poem, I'm still in "the mode" - please
forgive my own narcissistic inebriation with the exuberance of my own
superfluous verbosity... <G>). ;-)
Many of them are just like the closed minded religious fundys they
claim to disrespect and hate the most.
I agree with this completely. I'm not sure what I think about the
'ratio' of such-to-such, and I'm not about to name names, but it is
definitely true in all too many cases.
Their religion just happens to be politics.
I know what you're saying, but I have a bit of a tough time describing
it that way. I think when it comes to this forum, with the atheists
who converse here and _why_ they converse here, it could more properly
be said for a larger percentage of them that their _politics_ just
happens to be "religion".
Frankly I have been bored to tears by their bleating, brainwashed crap
for quite a while.
Understood.
I'm looking for another hobby at the moment.
Have you ever considered sky-diving? I hear it's quite fun. And if
you do naked skydiving with any females, you get to see their tits
turn into miniature parachutes. It's really quite hysterical - and
I'd think so even if I were a woman, or a similar thing could be noted
on men. ;-)
You have been free about posting your history btw.
You made it public.
I apologize if I seemed to imply otherwise. I know exactly what I've
made public and what I haven't. Truth be known, there isn't very much
that any single person in the world can't know about me if they simply
look on Usenet. And if human civilization persists for any length of
time, that means all of these things aren't going to just "go away"
any time soon. I've regretted that on occasion in the past, and I'm
sure I'll regret that on occasion in the future. But, "Oh, well!"
That's life and all that jazz. I fully accept that by doing so, I've
opened my entire "soul", if you will, up to analysis, critique,
observation and yes, even attack. That doesn't mean I have to sit
idly by and endure something I think is unfair. In case it seemed so,
I'm not referring to you with that statement. It's just relevant to
the issue being discussed, not to you at the moment. :-)
It's really rather disgusting, but I'm almost the opposite of a
pathological liar - not only can I not hide the truth, I can't even
seem to just "keep it to myself" whether there is or isn't any call to
make it known. :-/
And I actually found myself bleeding from your wounds.
It's a terribly sad story.
I appreciate the sentiment, and I really mean that. But you don't
need to break out the Kleenex on my account. There are far more
attrocious tragedies in the world than own miserable existence. Just
yesterday, I read of a case in alt.true-crime where a woman was
arrested for injecting feces into her infant in the most horrible case
of "Munchausen by proxy" case I've ever seen. Yes, my life has been
"tragic" in ways, but there are good things too and some people don't
even have that much to hinge their sanity upon. :-(
If you wanted to make an impression you certainly did.
I just wish your life would work out well for you.
I truly do.
I can honestly say that you're saying right here exactly what I might
say if I were posting whilst in your shoes. Of course, there would
probably be a lot of, "OUCH!" and, "DAMN, how do you _WEAR_ these
microscopic little things?" as I'm a very big-footed man. But then
again, you might be, too. Besides, since I waasn't being literal and
am just babbling at this point, I suppose that was a relatively
useless point to make. ;-)
Thanks. I'm going to reply to the other one, too, but I don't think
I've said anything in this post to make myself feel like an ***** once
it's been posted. So it should be safe. ;-)

Not at all. But if a Catholic says, "Love thy neighbor as thyself
because it says so in Leviticus," then yes, it _is_ less wise.
I think I see your point.
Either he says it because he believes it and sees it as wisdom or he
is just quoting from scripture because that's his job.
But isn't the statement itself wise despite the idiocy of the bearer
of the message?
Figure this...If I were to say that two plus two equals four would the
statement be any less true because I don't have a degree in
mathematics?
And imo the reason a.a. drives you crazy is because there is so damned
much closed minded ***** posted by people who pride themselves to a
fault on being rational and open minded.
I have to count myself among them on far too many occasions to truly
be able to condemn anyone for that. And I do condemn them for that.
And I'm being a hypocrite when I do.
Aye!
That's thing that hurts isn't it?
I'm afflicted with hypocrisy regarding some things myself.
But then when I look at my beautiful little three year old grandbaby
and ask "Who loves ya darlin?" and she laughs and replies "GRANDAPA!"
and high fives me there's not a hypocritical thing about it.
And when I break out my guitar and start singing...
"Ain't she sweet,
See her walking down the street.
Now I ask you very confidentially...
Ain't she sweet?"
And when she puts on her cowboy hat, dances to the music and looks at
us with that sly little grin that says she knows damned well she is
being cute as hell and throws her sweet little arms around me when the
song is over there is nothing hypocritical about that.
See that's life Avender.
It's the beautiful moments that no one can take away from us that
matter.
These are the moments we will take to our death bed.
We can all make the choice to go out terrified and lonely, saying "I'm
so cold" or pass on with a smile on our faces and feeling so
wonderfully warm, surrounded by people who love us because we loved
them...and because we chose to live good and decent lives.
And that's a thing that takes a lot of work sometimes but is so well
worth the effort in the end.
But then you already know that don't you?
You know, it truly _sucks_ when you're so completely willing to open
your eyes up to your own faults. ;-) I almost wish I could lie to
myself again, like I did when I was still a Christian. :-# But
darkness cannot be "undispelled", so I trudge on bathed by such
painful light. :-(
You don't have to be a Christian to lie to yourself Avender.
And how are your faults any worse than those of the next man?
Who convinced you that they are?
What exactly do you think it is that keeps those saint's feet on the
ground?
How is it that you believe they are so perfect that their judgements
should be taken to heart?
Are you lying to yourself or buying into the lies they tell you?
Would you like to know what they think about in their quiet unfettered
moments?
Would you like to know what they would do if they could do it in the
shadows without fear of discovery?
You want to know what mankind is too often about?
Alright...
Here you go...
Hiroshimo, Nagasaki...Auschwitz, Birkenau, Dachau, Chelmno,
Sobibor..Dresden..Gulag...Slavery...infanticide...patricide...matricide
suicide...homicide...greed and pride... a little profit on the side...
And the beat goes on.....
However...When I look at my beautiful little three year old grandbaby
and ask "Who loves ya darlin?" and she laughs and replies "GRANDAPA!"
and high fives me it gives me hope.
It's true love my friend...
And I care more about that than I do about all the politics, religion
and gold in the world.
So what the hell is it that makes you so damned bad?
I wish that you could have the thing that I have.
Everything else imo is pure ***** if you will please pardon the
expression.
(Sorry, I just wrote an archaic poem, I'm still in "the mode" - please
forgive my own narcissistic inebriation with the exuberance of my own
superfluous verbosity... <G>). ;-)
Hee...cute :-)
Many of them are just like the closed minded religious fundys they
claim to disrespect and hate the most.
I agree with this completely. I'm not sure what I think about the
'ratio' of such-to-such, and I'm not about to name names, but it is
definitely true in all too many cases.
People just looking for a cause maybe?
Everybody looks for a cause.
Just in the wrong place sometimes.
(Did I tell you about my granddaughter? :-)
I would be more inclined to think their religion is politics.
Same thing maybe.
There is only one person in a.a. that I dislike on a personal basis
btw.
Frankly I don't even mind having my arse jumped every now and then.
I've been corrected by some of the best.
I've actually appreciated for the most part.
I've learned a lot here.
It's really quite hysterical - and
I'd think so even if I were a woman, or a similar thing could be noted
on men. ;-)
Well alright then...
I'll tell you this.
I considered taking it up a few years ago.
I talked to a FedEx pilot who had a jump school and even had a jump
tower in his back yard.
I asked him about safety and he explained that the chutes he used had
three rip chords.
All color coded of course.
I'm sure I'm getting the color codes wrong but bear with me here.
It was something along the lines that the first one was green which
you would pull when you like some sort of fool you jumped out of a
perfectly well operating aircraft.
The second was yellow which you would pull if mister green was off
duty that day and which would, if working properly throw off the first
chute and open the emergency chute.
The third was red which was the one you would pull if you landed in a
lake or river and needed to disgard both chutes to keep them from
dragging you down and drowning you.
It all sounded pretty good until I went to bed that night and dreamed
that I jumped, forgot the color codes and pulled the red one when I
left the aircraft disgarding both chutes and leaving me in the
somewhat embarrassing situation of having made a total fool of myself
with the flapping arms and all..and going to my death hearing the
laughter of my peers in the background.
So no...I don't think I want to do that.
I opened my heart to these folks when my wife died.
I was terribly lost at the time.
And very confused.
So many of them let me know that I was not alone.
I will never forget that.
It helped more than they will ever know.
It's mostly a good place...just frustrating sometimes.
It's really rather disgusting, but I'm almost the opposite of a
pathological liar - not only can I not hide the truth, I can't even
seem to just "keep it to myself" whether there is or isn't any call to
make it known. :-/
Heh.
I quite honestly can't tell a lie myself.
It keeps me from backing myself into a corner.
Sort of if you don't do the thing you don't have to lie about it.
It works well for me.
Keeps me out of trouble :-)
I know what you mean.
I know such wonderful people and they make my life worth living.
I'm very blessed in that.
All the trash takes a backseat to the good things and the trash is
something I mostly dismiss as stuff that happens.
I just happened to be there when some of it was going on.
I don't really take it personally.
So it should be safe. ;-)
You are not an *****.
I suspect you would be hard pressed to play one.
Even in usenet ;-)

By the way, I was serious when I suggested therapy. Might help you to

YES!! That partisan, double standard mentality that some folks have

I recently began a serious, in depth study of the Soviet Union, this
after doing the same regarding the French Revolution and began to see
the similarities between those who were rabid followers of the party
line in those situations and those in a.a. who seem to share some of
the same characteristics.
For instance in a.a. conservative equals evil and conservative
opinions can be rather viscously attacked, most often on a personal
level which prevents a serious discussion of the issues.
Soviet leadership blamed their failures on people they claimed wrecked
their efforts and though the overwhelming majority of those accused
were innocent their neighbors and friends would shun them and ridicule
them as "wreckers."
I found this particularly sad.
A man, Vasily Vlasov the head of a District Consumer Cooperative was
accused of crimes against the people and excuted.
Solzhenitsyn wrote:

lies, lies and more lies."
Even after he confessed they supported him saying that his crimes were
understandable.
(But then many of those sentenced to the Gulag and even those
condemned to die under Lenin and Stalin continued to worship them and
profess their loyality to the party).
I began to believe that all Democrats were idiots and began to dislke
and distrust them simply because they *were* Democrats.
But I also knew that when Reagan was accused of crimes, and before the
jury was in, as far as his followers were concerned either he didn't
do it (it was political propaganda), he didn't know about it or he was
forced into it by evil Democrats.
An a.a. regular once *accused* me of being a card carrying Republican

Ray and Bill, I honestly have to say that I've seen such attacks from
both sides. I try to stay out of such messages, unless the attacker is
particularly rude or troll-like. Conservatives attack liberals and
liberals attack conservatives. It happens every time there is a
Presidential election. It can get pretty painful, and you very soon
learn who to avoid responding to (Fred Stone is a good example).
Most people, like you and I, know enough not to argue politics
with people you like. It isn't worth it to end a good friendship over
political differences.

Yes, and maybe a little when we're between elections, too. But at
absolutely no other time, I agree. ;-)

You name names. I like that. Of all the Jewish slash-loving atheist

Awww, how sweet. :-) And I'm fond of them, too. :-)

That's the real tragedy, isn't it? So often, the ones who know
anything about politics don't argue about it at all, keeping their
informed opinions to themselves. Then the ones who know _nothing_
about it argue about it *incessantly*, doing their best to spread
their ignorance. Then there are those who know only politics and
nothing else. They'll argue with you even when you're >>agreeing<<
with them, silly little gits.
Sometimes the ONLY choice is to just shut the hell up and do your best
to be "entertained" by it all.
Then again, it _can_ be fun participating in the fool's game, but only
if you do it in style. ;-) One must only ever drink foolishness in
moderation if one doesn't wish to end one's life within a spectacular
"social DUI".

Ray and Bill, I honestly have to say that I've seen such attacks from
both sides. I try to stay out of such messages, unless the attacker is

Presidential election. It can get pretty painful, and you very soon
learn who to avoid responding to (Fred Stone is a good example).
Most people, like you and I, know enough not to argue politics

political differences.
I was trying to gig Bill into a conversation.
We've had a good one.
I like the guy.
I also like Fred.

I've gotten into arguments in different newsgroups and
I felt like I was in a (liberal) minority each time.

A gender-neutral pronoun, equivalent to "she or he". Related to
"hir", the equivalent of "him or her". "Hirs" would, or course, be
"hers or his". They're not standard acceptable English yet and maybe
never will be, but I tend to use them on the fly when I've forgotten
whether a person whose only feature I ever see is text happens to be
male or female. Sorry for the confusion. ;-)

Do you have a specific example in mind?
How much time do you have?
Post after post after post about evil Republicans and conservatives.
Some conservative ideas are really good, some liberal ideas are really
good.
Why is that so hard to understand?
Some Republicans are liberal and some Democrats are conservative.

I don't think I have ever seen a liberal politician get lynched here.
More importantly do you wanna work out a deal to buy a KORG digital
recording studio with ten million recordable tracks <That's a joke but
it is a lot> that can be mixed down directly to cd?
I've had the damned thing for two years and it's been out of the box
twice for the brag factor but never hooked up.
What do you use at this point?
Maybe I'll just give you the damned thing.
Sheesh!
I'd rather pay somebody to do my demos rather than jack with this
thing.
You want it?

It's not. But in our two-party, with-us-or-against-us type

Damn!
<Looking fer it>
A D12.
(anything in its category

want to get out of it?
Not getting out of anything.
It's paid for.
How much do I want?
I paid $1100 or $1200
I can't remember.
You can pay me for it when I need the money.
Which I don't at the moment and don't expect to until I meet a really
pretty young female who bleeds me dry before she bails on me.
And that ain't likely to happen anytime soon because frankly I'm too
tired and lazy to deal with such things.
Seriously, you will be able to put it to better use than I ever will.
If you still have my e-mail address send me your home address and I
will ship it out some time this week or next.
<My last computer rolled over on me and I don't have your address any

I would much rather you have it than to have to lug it up into the
attic.
Btw, it's a pretty complicated piece of equipment but I have the
manual and a video tape that came with it.

I tried to find the video that came with the recorder but didn't

It really doesn't matter because it wasn't helpful anyway.
I do have the manual on this one.
