Sometime this summer President Bush will pick a new chairman of the
Joint Chiefs of Staff to lead a U.S. military that has been battered by
the war in Iraq. When you ask military officers who should get the job,
the first thing many say is that the military needs someone who can
stand up to Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld.

Where did you hear this? I'm a news hound and I've never heard any
ranking military person, even retired ones, say this. I have heard a
lot of journalists and pundits say it though.
I was not for the war in Iraq but I have to admit that the middle East
is looking much more promising then it has in quite a long time.

A serving military officer cannot make such a statement publicly. It is
against the UCMJ and has been prosecuted in the past.

Unless you're attributing Arafat's death to US action then I would not
give the US much credit for improvements in the Mid East.
