Charlotte Denny and Charlotte Moore on how George Bush could have used
the money spent on the mission to Mars
Wednesday January 21, 2004
The Guardian
Anyone who believes that George Bush's plan to send humans to Mars
will end up costing the $1bn the US president has budgeted the trip at
so far probably thinks that the astronauts will find little green men
when they get there.
When George Bush Sr first proposed a manned trip to the red planet, 14
years ago, Nasa estimated the price tag would be at least $400bn. In
today's prices, the cost is probably now closer to $1 trillion.

So what? Who cares?
What gets me is that Bush will spend billions, but there
will be no mission to Mars. There will be no Mission
to the Moon, either.
They'll be a lot of fat contracts for the same people who
run the Space Shuttle. Oh yes, that was outsourced
*Years* ago, but even the NASA people seemed to have
forgotten this fact while they were taken the blame for
the latest disaster.
Better you blame NASA than the people who actually
run the Shuttle program. Otherwise the taxpayers might
get mad and cut their profit margins.
There's a lot of good reasons why Bush wants to help
these people, and all of them in cash.
