Analysis: Caste and power in India
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/south_asia/3189767.stm
By India analyst Vijay Rana
Uttar Pradesh, India's most politically important state, has a new
chief minister. And once again, caste is playing a major role in
politics there.
Mulayam Singh Yadav, the new Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh (UP),
belongs to a backward caste known as the Yadavs.

Heart of darkness
http://www.guardian.co.uk/g2/story/0,3604,1042100,00.html
As a young backpacker Luke Harding found India charming and eccentric.
Fifteen years later he returned as the Guardian's correspondent. Now,
after finishing his time there, he recalls how one terrible incident
of secular violence in Gujarat brought his love affair with the
country to an end
Monday September 15, 2003
The Guardian
I can identify the moment I fell out of love with India quite
precisely. It happened at the end of last February. Riots had just
broken out in the western state of Gujarat, after a group of Muslims
attacked a train full of Hindu pilgrims, killing 59 of them. In
Gujarat's main city, Ahmedabad, trouble was brewing. Hindu mobs had
begun taking revenge on their Muslim neighbours - there were stories
of murder, looting and arson. Arriving in Ahmedabad from Delhi, I
found it impossible to hire a car or driver: nobody wanted to drive
into the riots.
But the trouble was not difficult to find: smoke billowed from above
Ahmedabad's old city; and I set off towards it on foot. There were
rumours that a mob had hacked to death Ahsan Jafri - a distinguished
Indian former MP, and a Muslim - whose Muslim housing estate was
surrounded by a sea of Hindu houses. A team from Reuters gave me a
lift. Driving through streets full of burned-out shops and broken
glass we arrived half an hour later outside his compound, surrounded
by thousands of people. Jafri had been dead for several hours, it
emerged. A Hindu mob had tipped kerosene through his front door; a few
hours later they had dragged him out into the street, chopped off his
fingers, and set him on fire. They also set light to several other
members of his family, including two small boys. There wasn't much
left of Jafri's Gulbarg Housing Society by the time we got there: at
the bottom of his stairs I discovered a pyre of human remains - hair
and the tiny blackened arm of a child, its fist clenched.

Goa's Catholics under threat?
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/south_asia/3201361.stm
By Zubair Ahmed
BBC correspondent in Goa
Forty years after the Portuguese left, the western Indian state of Goa
hangs on to an unusual legacy of imperial rule.
It is India's only state with a uniform civil code.
This means that the Hindus, who make up 60% of the population, the
Catholics, who account for 35%, and its tiny minority of Muslims are
governed by just one, uniform, set of family laws.
The code has worked well enough for centuries - but now there are
fears for Goa's fabled communal harmony.

India's young brides rebel against the dowry demand
http://news.independent.co.uk/world/asia/story.jsp?story=451703
By Phil Reeves in Delhi
10 October 2003
A new and unlikely front has been opened in the battle by young Indian
women against illegal dowry demands, this time within a bastion of
religious and cultural conservatism, Varanasi on the Ganges.
The ancient holy city, where devout Hindus traditionally go to die,
has become the venue of a high-profile and decidedly contemporary
confrontation between a media-savvy young woman and a man whose family
she accuses of illegally demanding money for her hand.

The Indian police detained more than 600 people as they gathered in a
northern town to campaign for the building of a Hindu temple on the
ruins of a mosque.

Television is luring Asians to the city—and shaping expectations of
what they'll find there
By Sarah Schafer and Sudip Mazumdar
NEWSWEEK
Oct. 20 issue — Aalo Maity barely remembers life before her tiny
Indian village got its first television set. She only remembers that
after, life seemed unbearable. Every night she would gather with other
villagers in a hut to watch soap operas that showed people in pressed
clothes strolling while savoring ice cream from pretty cups. "In my
hut we ate soggy rice and lentils and I wore darned saris," Maity
recalls. "I wanted a better life." So she and her husband, Gaurang,
leased out their land and found jobs in New Delhi—Aalo works as a
maid, Gaurang drives an auto rickshaw. "From the time we got a
television our lives changed, at least in our dreams," says Maity.

It exposed corruption at the top of the political establishment, so
the government forced it to close. But now India's bravest website is
back - this time as a newspaper. Phil Reeves reports from Delhi
21 October 2003
The windows are papered over to keep out prying eyes. There is a lock
on the door. The acronym produced by the collective name of the
journalists who will work within - the Tehelka Investigations Team -
may be light-hearted. Their purpose is not. The digging, which will be
carried out over the coming months, here inside a cubby-hole in the
corner of a newsroom, will do much to determine the success or failure
of this closely watched publishing launch.

India's young are becoming world-class consumers, and multinationals
are taking note
By MICHAEL SCHUMAN/NEW DELHI
Monday, Aug. 25, 2003
It's a blistering 115° on a summer Sunday in New Delhi, and it feels
as if your head is stuck in a tandoor. But Saurabh Kedia, 22, would
never know it. The New Delhi native dips his flat naan bread into a
dish of spinach curry in the air-conditioned comfort of a friend's
private club. On the table lies Kedia's prized possession, an Ericsson
feature-loaded mobile phone with PDA-like functions that cost him
nearly $400, almost as much as an average Indian earns in a year. That
night he plans to watch X2: X-Men United at a posh, newly built
multiplex theater south of New Delhi and then sip cappuccinos with
friends at one of the city's hip new coffee shops, a twice-weekly
indulgence for Kedia. With his job as a computer-call-center manager,
he is earning enough to consider buying a car and even his own
apartment. "We are able to make more and much easier money," says
Kedia, beaming. "Every year in India, things are looking up."

When Manoj Night Shyamalan was growing up in suburban Philadelphia in
the 1980s, his parents--both immigrants from India, both
physicians--piled on the pressure. "There was simply an assumption
that I'd come first in my class," he recalls. He was also expected to
follow his parents into medicine. When he told them he would instead
study moviemaking at New York University, they were horrified. Now
they feel a lot better. In 1997, five years after his graduation, Walt
Disney Studios paid Shyamalan $2.5 million for the screenplay of the
Bruce Willis thriller The Sixth Sense and let the young writer direct
the movie as well. The ghost tale has earned more than $680 million
worldwide since its release last year and garnered six Academy Award
nominations. "If it hadn't grossed $100 million," he laughs, "I don't
know what my parents would have done."

In cool Sikkim, BJP and Cong are strange bedfellows
http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/cms.dll/html/comp/articleshow?msid=208907
TIMES NEWS NETWORK[ TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 30, 2003 04:23:09 AM ]
NEW DELHI: If there is one state where the Congress and the BJP, the
two national-level rivals, have merged, it is Sikkim. BJP's K C
Pradhan has merged his party with the Congress. This interplay could
pose a challenge to chief minister Pawan Kumar Chamling and his Sikkim
Democratic Front (SDF) in time for the assembly polls due next year.
