For many Muslims, the events of this month have exposed the
inadequacies of Britain's smug multiculturalism

February 2006 has proved a mensis horribilis for British Muslims. Cast
your mind back over the past few weeks and virtually all the major news
stories were guaranteed to provoke Muslim outrage: from the publication
of the Danish cartoons across Europe to the leaked full report of Abu
Ghraib abuse, the video of British troops abusing Iraqi teenagers, the
glorification-of-terrorism legislation, and the UN report on
Guant=E1namo Bay. The uncanny coincidence of three trials involving free
speech - Nick Griffin, David Irving and Abu Hamza - has only thrust
into sharper contrast for British Muslims the double standards of which
they believe they are so often victims.

Being tolerance of people's various cultural perspectives is one thing.
Rolling over and playing dead when muslim theocrats come into your
country and threaten you with death for exercising your constitutional
rights is quite another thing. The muslim right to practice their own
religion is not a right to dictate how I behave as well, despite their
shrill assertions to the contrary.

eradicate." -- Richard Dawkins

British muslims queued on TV to tell us how happy they were
Hamza had been found guilty and applauded the sentence. The
men who lost control of the mosque to Hamza had it handed back
to them by the Police once they had removed the stash of weapons
and are delighted their congregation (whatever they call them) is
returning so that was a plus not a negative for them
It has been announced that Griffin will be retried. How does
Irvings conviction hurt them?

I think the writer has in mind the fact that many Muslims in the West feel
that any individual or organisation can slander, vilify, insult or offend
them *with complete impunity* -- while the Irving case (and now the
Livingstone case too...) demonstrates that 'free speech' ends *at the point
where the Jewish lobby feels offended*...

Muslims will just have to get over that feeling. Holocaust denial goes
beyond mere offense to the "Jewish lobby".

It still shouldn't be a crime.

Austria has particular historical reasons to disagree with you on that.
Their history of anti-semitism makes a very good case for criminalizing
that particularly odious category of "opinion".

This is why they have juries. They are our bulwark against tyranny.
If they think the law under which a person is charged is tyrannical
then it is their duty to refuse to convict under it.

There is some merit in this.
