June 24 - It may be unlikely, but it would be a welcome historical
flourish if George W. Bush elevated Sandra Day O'Connor to chief
justice when the ailing William Rehnquist steps down, which could
happen as early as next week. Appointed by Ronald Reagan in 1983,
O'Connor was the first woman on the high court and it would be a
fitting tribute to the role she has played as a common-sense centrist
on social issues and guardian of basic protections for women,
particularly reproductive rights.
