Ill-focused protest is too destructive

Iraq angered many, but voting against Labour is not the answer

Anger has often been a spur to political action. Alongside human
compassion and solidarity, anger at the state of the world has got
many activists out of bed in the morning and kept them working late
into the night.
But as a guide to action, anger is rarely a reliable friend. A year
after I left the government I still believe the Iraq war was a major,
traumatising misjudgment. Yet I have lost none of my enthusiasm for
campaigning for Labour votes in next week's elections. If anything,
the daily task of working the phones, the streets, the visits and the
meetings underlines how futile and counter-productive the angry,
incoherent protest vote urged by George Galloway (and with more
subtlety by the Liberal Democrats) would be.
