For an occasion intended to mark the rebirth of a nation, Monday's
transfer of Iraqi sovereignty did not offer much in the way of
historic grandeur. The deal was done with a handshake in a nondescript
room in Baghdad's Green Zone, and the country's new rulers merely
shrugged and shuffled out. The few journalists present were prevented

confiscated on the way in by anxious security guards.
