Such a tease
http://www.guardian.co.uk/weekend/story/0,3605,1580799,00.html
Jon Stewart is very funny and on his cult US television show he's a
rare scourge of the rich and powerful, especially Bush and his court.
Gary Younge puts it to him, is he really angry with America, or is he a
man on a mission for the next joke?
Saturday October 1, 2005
The Guardian
Back in early 2003, as Democrats discussed setting up a liberal talk
radio station to counter the right's supremacy in the culture wars,
there was concern that progressive values were inherently unsuited to a
popular format. "Progressives have this problem: they sound too
erudite, it's like eggheads talking at you," Thomas Athans, co-founder
of Democracy Radio, Inc, told the New York Times. "Most liberal
talkshows are so, you know, milquetoast, who would want to listen to
them?" said Harry Thomason, a Hollywood producer close to Bill Clinton.
"Conservatives are all fire and brimstone."

I just want to take this opportunity to say that Jon Stewart is damn good at
what he does.
And I also want to say that it is truly unfortunate that the only "news"
program in the US that can tell it like it is, is a fake news program on
comedy central.

"America's most trusted name in fake news."

I watch PBS, Listen to NPR and also "democracy now" on other, lesser
public radio stations, but I'm in LOVE with the Daily Show on comedy
central.
In keeping with a long tradition, only the Jester can tell the King
and his court what is REALLY happening in the kingdom.
I never ceases to amaze me how the Big new sources all seem to do the
same thing... repeat verbatem what anyone tells them, without any
real fact checking or truth. The current breed of news show thinks
that being "unbiased" means giving equal time to those who say support
science in science class and those pushing for creationism-as-science.
My FAVORITE thing The Daily Show does (other than 'this week in God')
is when they show someone making some statement at a news conference
and then show that Same Person, weeks, or months or years earlier
saying THE EXACT OPPOSITE...
One example.. IN Bush's first campaign he said "The US will Never be
invovled in Nation Building"... then, 3 years later, he says "Nation
Building is a hard road, it'll take time...."

That's the reason the right attacks Jon. They know he speaks the truth, and
they have no way to defend themselves so they attack him. There is no
antidote for truth, and the right knows it.

Unfortunately for this administration, all their lies have been
documented and are on tape. The Daily Show's strength is that they can
go back into their archives and pull the relevant tape and show it next
to the current lie.
I can see how people caught up in the lie would find it unfunny.

Hear hear!

And the only thing in print that rivials him is The Onion.

It says so much about the leftwing worldview that a fake news
program or a satirical website are better at "telling it like it
is" than the real thing.

Humor without truth isn't funny.

Unfortunately for this administration, all their lies have been
documented and are on tape. The Daily Show's strength is that they
can go back into their archives and pull the relevant tape and show
it next to the current lie.

I can see how people caught up in the lie would find it unfunny.

And the ones not caught up in the lie laugh their asses off.

Mind you, they laugh because they know if they started screaming and
clawing their faces off, they wouldn't be able to stop.

Well mostly, it's why comedy has always been the refuge of the liberal
intellectual. In a way, it's safe to speak the truth there. You have
to be truthful in comedy or it isn't funny - so what is said has to
have truth in it to survive.

Unfortunately the same isn't true for the news shows.

You don't have to speak the truth, you just have to have an audience who
believes it. Which is why programs like SNL and The Daily Show have become
echo chambers. They preach to the choir.

They're much closer to accurate than Limbaugh, Hannity and the rest of
the folks who want a bundle of sticks as their insignia.

I remember John Stewart back when he was doing silly commentary on the
Comedy Channel, back when that was called "Ha!". I recognized his talent
back then and that was about 15 years ago (gad, I'm old).
I'll never forget "The Daily Show"'s first broadcast after 9/11. Sad, but
wonderful. He is a gem.

Turn to PBS then.
The only real news in the US is "Newshour with Jim Lehrer". Everything
else lacks the core incentive to deliver news.

I'll second that. They do two things right: they give plenty of time to
their stories, and they get real experts and let them answer questions
in detail. They don't do soundbites or half quotes.
