It's nigh on 500 years since a British leader first attended a summit,
and not much has changed in the meantime. Back in 1520, Cardinal
Wolsey set up a meeting between his boss, Henry VIII, and Francis I of
France at the Field of the Cloth of Gold. The meeting lasted for three
weeks, almost bankrupted the French treasury and - guess what - was a
total flop.
