Right now, America is in the midst of a serious identity crisis over
abortion rights. The Democrats' confident, pro-choice stance on the
issue is crumbling; the fervour of the evangelicals is getting more
sophisticated: there is currently an intense battle over the hearts and
minds of a deeply conflicted populace.
The latest news is that anti-abortion groups have transformed a routine
aspect of prenatal care, the ultrasound, into a powerful political
tool. Several thousand "pregnancy crisis centres" run by right-to-life
organisations have begun to recognise that ultrasounds are highly
effective as a means of persuading women to keep their babies.
