In a shock result for a film that garnered only so-so reviews, Ken
Loach's The Wind that Shakes the Barley won the coveted Palme d'Or at
the Cannes film festival - the first British film to do so for a
decade, since Mike Leigh's Secrets and Lies. A delighted Loach said
last night: "This is an extraordinary recognition by the jury. This is
the biggest prize in world cinema. I am really knocked out by this."
