ANY comprehensive book about California will always sound slightly
like the Guinness Book of World Records. In ''Coast of Dreams,'' Kevin
Starr points out that we Californians have more overseas trade
missions than many a nation; by 2027 we are projected to have more
prisoners than all of Western Europe, Canada, Japan, Australia and New
Zealand combined; we produce a quarter of all food eaten in the United
States; Los Angeles County's economy is worth more than all of
Russia's; and not long ago the Los Angeles Police Department had the
highest killing-per-officer ratio in the country.

Last I heard, California had the seventh largest economy in the world.
