OT: Ladies and gentlement, we got him! |
BAGHDAD, Iraq — U.S. troops captured Saddam Hussein (search), the former
Iraqi dictator and most-wanted figure by the U.S.-led coalition, as he
tried to hide in a basement in Tikrit, officials announced at a Sunday
news conference.
"Ladies and gentlement, we got him," L. Paul Bremer (search), the U.S.
administrator in Iraq, announced.
On the basis of a tip from a local resident, the U.S. military conducted
the raid in Tikrit, Saddam's hometown, sources said. Soldiers found a
man who looked very thin, with a long grey beard, hiding in a basement,
sources said.
Saddam did not put up any resistance, officials told Fox News.
Earlier, a member of the U.S.-appointed Governing Council (search) said
Saddam had been captured alive in Tikrit.
Council member Dara Noor al-Din told The Associated Press that the
council was informed of the former dictator's capture in a telephone
call from L. Paul Bremer, the U.S. administrator for Iraq.
"Bremer has confirmed to the Governing Council that Saddam was captured
in Tikrit," Noor al-Din said. "He spoke on the phone to several members,
including Ahmad Chalabi."
Chalabi is a leading member of the council who has close links to the
Bush administration.
A council spokesman, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed that
Bremer had relayed news of Saddam's capture to the council. A council
delegation planned to visit Saddam in captivity later Sunday, the
spokesman said.
Another Governing Council member, Jalal Talabani, was earlier quoted by
Iran's official news agency, IRNA, as saying Saddam had been captured in
Tikrit.
Talabani told IRNA that Saddam's detention will bring stability to Iraq.
"With the arrest of Saddam, the source financing terrorists has been
destroyed and terrorist attacks will come to an end. Now we can
establish a durable stability and security in Iraq," Talabani was quoted
as saying.
In Baghdad, residents fired small arms in the air in celebration, and
gunfire echoed in neighborhoods across the city. Earlier in the day,
rumors of the capture sent people streaming into the streets of Kirkuk,
a northern Iraqi city, firing guns in the air in celebration.
"We are celebrating like it's a wedding," said Kirkuk resident Mustapha
Sheriff. "We are finally rid of that criminal."
"This is the joy of a lifetime," said Ali Al-Bashiri, another resident.
"I am speaking on behalf of all the people that suffered under his rule."

We didn't need to go to war to get rid of Saddam. So, even if you
want to cling to the fantasy that the U.S. is the world's police man,
you still can't justify the war.

If the Iraqi people have a problem with their leader, it's up to them - not
us - to deal with him. The Iranians managed to get rid of their CIA
sponsored despot, so there's no reason to suppose the Iraqis couldn't have
done the same.

The US got into that because the war in the former Yugoslavia was
causing thousands of refugees to stream into Western Europe and the
war furthermore threatened to destabilize the whole surrounding region
(with guns and militia fighters running around), an area which happens
to be in Western Europe's back yard. We are their allies, so we got
dragged into helping them out.
Yugoslavia was an international effort, and Milosevic was tried by the
International War Crimes Tribunal.
Our unprovoked invasion of Iraq, however, was done against the wishes
of our allies. It was also a poorly-defined mission that went against
the wishes of our own military. It has played right into the hands of
Al Qaeda, however. Hussein was an enemy of Bin Laden. Now Iraq is a
one-country Al Qaeda recruitment station. Good work, Dubya.

I really don't see how you could have detected a tone of sadness from "Yeah.

then turn around and sue the government for millions, the way Rodney King

That's quite an accomplishment.
And well worth the sacrifice by our courageous troops.
It's easy to say that when you're not the one being sacrificed.
And it's easy to deny that it was worth it, when you're not an Iraqi being
*****-hammered on a daily basis by Saddam.
If the Iraqi people have a problem with their leader, it's up to them - not
us - to deal with him.
Yes, well, we had a problem with him too.
When are you going to have a problem with the leaders of Indonesia,
China, the Phillipines, Pakistan, et al.?
No, the way it works is that we have a little list of leaders who are
our friends (we pull their strings), leaders who are not our friends
(we don't), and leaders of countries too powerful for us to kick over
(but we might try to subvert their elections anyway, such as in
Australia).
This business about democracy is just ideological claptrap. The US
Gov't actually hates foreign democracies, as they cause too many
problems for US businesses and they don't always get on the bus for US
military strategy.

Ahh, the Cold War. We didn't much give a damn about their type of
government, it was whether they were cozy with the Soviets.

Yeah, he was sitting on ***** Cheney's oil fields. But I was addressing
Fester's specific point.
The Iranians managed to get rid of their CIA
sponsored despot, so there's no reason to suppose the Iraqis couldn't
have done the same.
So the more effective the despot is at suppressing revolt the more
legitimate his rule is?
Tricky, isn't it? It's a nice, romantic notion to think you can just go
round there, beat up the bad guy and everybody will live happily ever
after. It's just a pity reality doesn't work like that.

Not that you've asked the Iraqis for their opinion, nor the Panamanians, nor
the Serbs, to name a few.

Haven't really had to in the case of the Iraqi. More soldiers have been
killed since May than in the first three years of Vietnam.
I was drafted in 1963 and during basic training the army gave us information
about guerrilla warfare.
There lectures and films taught that such action could not be maintained
without the will of the people.
The guerillas were the "fish" and the people were the "water".
They used the French resistance in WWII to demonstrate what happens when the
people of a country support the resistance. It goes on no matter what the
cost to the people.
They used an upraising in the Philippines to show the opposite.
The resistance continues In Iraq.
The resistance increases in Iraq.
We don't have to ask, they are speaking now.

Not just speaking, but cheering Saddam's capture. The remaining assholes in
Iraq do not have popular support, and that is why we'll win.

Except of course that they hate us as much if not more than they hated
Hussein.
The occupying forces have no idea how to behave towards the civilian
population. What was that about winning hearts and minds again?

Pssst. Don't tell fester, but he & the rest of the neo-cons have been
telling
us for more than a year now that Saddam had no "popular support."

Just what are you on about now? First you tell me that the people are
supporting the terrorists. Now you tell me that they're resentful of the
people who freed them from and just captured Saddam. You must not have seen
the news, because if you had, you would have seen lots of Union Jacks and
Stars and Stripes being waved by happy Iraqis.
