O.T. Legal advice rent |
My 83 year old mother lives in Michigan in a huge apartment complex
for over thirty years.
She is paying $670 a month. They are renting identical apartments for
what ever they can get, as low as $499 (rare). The lady at their
headquarters assures me they can charge what ever they want.
Any recourse?
Thank
.

If there are rent control laws, the recourse is the agency that
enforces them. Otherwise none.

Not quite. If there is a lease she has to stay for the length of the
lease. If it is month to month she can ask for a market rate apartment
else she will move.

Not exactly. She has to pay the amount specified in the lease. I've
never seen a lease that prohibits paying the whole balance in advance
and moving out. It's an option, but not a very practical one.

If you are going to be snarky. The lease gives the right of occupancy,
it probably says nothing about actual occupation. Some leases,
particularly with either rent control or rent subsidy, do require
occupancy.
