NOT many chief executives call themselves mavericks these days. But if
you've lived to the age of 85 and have been involved in business for
60 years - and if you knew Duke Ellington - you may have earned the
right to call yourself whatever you like.

Sidney Harman is the chief executive in question, or more precisely,
the executive chairman. He has built Harman International, the maker
of high-end audio and navigational systems that appear in cars from
BMW and Mercedes-Benz, into a $2-billion-a-year company. He describes
his exploits and his management style in "Mind Your Own Business: A
Maverick's Guide to Business, Leadership and Life"
(Currency/Doubleday, $24.95).
