An Air America Radio host's on-air claim that fellow host Randi Rhodes
was mugged has been denied by the New York Police Department and the
network.
"There is absolutely no report filed," said a source at the Deputy
Commissioner of Public Information who asked not to be quoted by name.
"There was no mugging."
Jon Elliott, a late-night host on the liberal radio network, told his
listeners early Tuesday that Rhodes was mugged outside her Manhattan
apartment Sunday night, losing several teeth in a brutal attack that
knocked her off the air while she recuperates.
"It is with sadness that tonight I inform you that my Air America
colleague Randi Rhodes was assaulted last night while walking her dog
near her New York City home," Elliott told his listeners.
"Is this an attempt by the right wing hate machine to silence one of
our own?" he asked. "Are we threatening them? Are they afraid that
we're winning? Are they trying to silence intimidate us?"

obviously didn't try to verify it which would just be another
indication that the politically obsessed are so willing to accept the

they don't know exactly what happened.
Jon Elliott, for whatever reason, exaggerated the situation and a a brief
bit of hysteria ensued.
Implying that anyone was lying is patently dishonest and does nothing to
defuse the situation.

Some years ago, Bob told me about the radio talk show which he insisted I
*had* to hear because he couldn't figure out what the hell was going on.
So there's this talk show with a host, guests, and callers. The usual
right? Except that quite often, the guests would start out pretty run of
the mill but, as things went on, become stranger and stranger and
stranger.
The callers would get increasingly upset and sometimes just *lose* it,
leaving the host to referee between a livid, ranting caller and a total
whack job of a guest.
First time, I ended up sitting in the drive way, staring at the radio,
with Bob asking, "You think this is real?"
I had *no* idea.
But... DAMN it was funny!
I went digging. Turns out, the callers were real. The host was real.
Nobody else. The host did *ALL* the voices. I had never heard nor heard
of anything like it. The man carried on full blown conversations, argued
with his guests, sometimes juggled two of them *and* a caller, and sucked
people in every show.
Crazy thing about it is after I discovered this, I realized Hendrie
hinted all the time that it was fake. He'd even have little "side"
conversations with his characters while a caller was having a full blown
rant that, if you paid attention, made it pretty damn clear it was all a
joke.
Still nobody got it.
If you stuck around and listened long enough, he'd often *SAY* he did all
the voices (I missed hearing that until after I was "in" on the joke).
Still nobody got it.
I watched a video once of Hendrie doing his show and it was wild. He'd be
doing things like switching between his mike and a phone receiver (the
"guest" was "calling in") and never missing a beat. Must have been
*exhausting*.
The one I'll *never* forget and which almost led to an accident on the
105 freeway was this "breaking news" he did once (helicopter reporter and
all). Kept going on about people gathering for a candle light vigil, the
crying, the shock of the people wandering the streets...
Only to announce: Oprah Winfrey's show had been renewed.
I like to rear ended somebody.
(It was actually a little risky listening to Hendrie while in rush hour
traffic <g>)
The man's a freaking genius. Unfortunately, he's apparently gone the way
of a lot of geniuses and decided to "try something new" and I hear it's
pretty crappy (like rambling political rants).
But *gawd* I miss the old Phil Hendrie...

Let's see - The liberal outlets are only reporting that Randi's lawyer
is assuring everyone it wasn't an attack of any kind. This was their
first report, as I could find nothing on it although I checked
repeatedly until they said this
Now O'Reilley on the other hand would have been telling us he was
attacked by Gore himself as he was single handedly throttling a
terrorist trying to set off a dirty bomb.

I actually had a problem with the idea that it was a deliberate lie
but felt he might have jumped to conclusions based on faulty info and
a willingness to reach a paranoid conclusion based on paranoid
politics.

I did. You make an accusation, then try to make a second contradictory
