OT: Life in the Lab |
As a scientist studying behavior one has to take into account the
environment. As the object of study the participants behavior will be
modified to reflect his/her surroundings. If the subject is behaving in a
poor manner not found outside the lab does one conclude that the behavior of
the subject is a reaction to the study. If so how can objective results be
obtained. Further if the subject has a negative reaction to the study how
does the researcher justify the continuation of the study.
Over a period of time I have come to conclude that the researcher must
delude themselves into thinking that the participants behavior is his/her
normal behavior when in fact it is the researcher behavior that needs to be
modified. Objective results can only be obtained by analyzing every part of
the system including the researcher.
As an example to provoke a emotional response like anger the researcher
must understand that to provoke a persons anger they must be offensive.
Offensive people are not liked or trusted, to obtain further results the
researcher needs to stop being offensive and make it up to the client before
the client feels a degree of trust and therefore the ability to talk openly
to the researcher.
