OT Linux question |
Does Linux have an RPG interpreter?
I dabbled in it at work, wrote a few fun (and a lot of useful) things
and now they are going to retire the unix box it's in.
I think I can get it onto a floppy.

SourceForge probably has a selection of Role Playing Game compilers

Report Program Generator. You can manipulate text and numbers pretty
well, I think it was created in early to mid 1970's. At work, it was
used to analyze paragraphs of octal data from switches, looking at
meaningful bit fields, saving us the arduous task of breaking stuff
into binary and looking it up in the documentation to see what data
was where in the processor, buses and stores.
I used it to break down octal dumps from the switch and print updated
forms for things like Automatic Route Selection for Centrex customers,
as the switches built in verification was unwieldy and the
manufacturer charged too much and took too long to process a tape.
And I wrote a bashing program, animating one of Mad Magazines "make a
phrase" flowcharts, as well as a random phrasemaker that would come
out with things like "systemized logical projection" that could be
buried in paragraphs to give bulk and impress (*****) people.

Is this RPG for games, or RPGIV from an as/400?

There is an open source RPG for Linux. It only comes in source code,
and it will compile on Red Hat and Mandrake. However, each machine I
have tried to run it on, core dumps when it's run.
If you will send me your actual e-mail address to
ktaylorazREMOVE-THIS@yahoo.com, I will send by replay the tar file with
the source code. I don't remember where I originally got it from, and
if you search for Linux RPG in Google or other search engine, you get
all the game stuff.
You know what to do with the REMOVE-THIS.

But how do you get the card deck into the Linux box?

Thanks, but I managed to FTP it to a floppy along with my crude fun
programs, directly from the unix box I started with years ago. We have
an IBM unix box laying around, I'll crank it up and see if it works
when I load from floppy.
See, I'm invited to a party where I think there's a linux box, and it
would be fun to load this and see if it works. If it does and people
want it, I'll post it on some binary group. It came from
/(withheld)/(withheld)/(withheld)/rpg and when I cp'd rpg to my local
directory it worked from my directory as well as from the "official" -
(altho I had to do a chmod 777 on my local rpg - didn't mess with
umask) so I have every reason to think copying the binary from floppy
along with my scripts it'll work. Mebbe have to mess with path names
in my apps, as I used full ones at the time.
It's just for fun, paleo-programming of a sort.
