OT: "Linux, we have LIFTOFF!" |
Finally, after spending almost a week trying to get a download of the iso
files to save up with the right checksum (found out it was the computer I
was on - bad memory, I think, it's been screwing up all my data). Finally
got a good computer together out of scrounged parts, and the iso's
downloaded without a hitch. Then I spend the better part of yesterday
evening burning the iso's to disk, only to find out I wasn't supposed to
burn them _as_ actual iso files. So four CDs wasted before I figured that
out. Five more CDs later, I managed to burn them correctly. THEN the
friggin' thing wouldn't install. Tried to do a dual boot, had nothing but
grief. Got fed up, wiped Windoze and all partitions from my system and
installed Linux as my ONLY OS. I've got the Fedora Core distribution with
a Gnome desktop for now. I plan to try getting used to the more textual
side of Linux as time goes on, but for the moment, I need something with a
look & feel like Windows as I go through "withdrawls". But Linux - once I
figured out what the hell I was doing - installed flawlessly, detecting
each and every single on-board card, peripheral and driver. I had sound
instantly, I had "millions and millions of colors" instantly, I had it all
right at once. Of course, my only complaint is that it took forever to
install. But now that it's installed, I'm glad I did it. I still have
the crappy components scrounged together into a Windows station - most
fitting, I think - and will probably keep it as such until I get new
memory for it to make a Linux install even possible. Then? Well, I'll
keep Windoze as a secondary OS on that machine just for the appz that I
can't yet find for Linux. But man, oh MAN, am I lovin' it! :-) Been
playing for hours, haven't had a single crash yet. Yes, yes, YESSS!!! :-)
Okay, what you have just witnessed was an "e-gasm". It probably won't be
over for several more hours yet, but it's now time to move on and go
spread the love elsewhere. Thanks for listening, I'm sure some of you
understand. :-)

L8r,
Uncle Buck
They say linux rocks. I installed it from a 3 CD set of Red Hat 7.1 that was
in a public library book on 300 mhz Gateway 2000 I found in a dumpster.
However, I trashed the filesystem when I tried to hotswap a winmodem, and
every trick I tried to repair the FS didn't work. Then I gave up temporarily
until I have more time to play with my salvaged and outmoded PC's. the great
thing about it is you can run it on old machines. I still have copies of the
3 cds so sue me.

That's one of the aspects which is going to hurt MS and badly. The
"developing markets" are countries where people have to stretch and
conserve their resources. Linux is useful on old machines even if you
can't run the latest and greatest GUIfied stuff. Windows is *hopeless on
anything but recent hardware.
And I don't even mean you have to use an "old" version of Linux. My
servers are all older hardware, running happily on the "one before the
bleeding edge" version of the distros I use. They can't run X and the GUI
heavy stuff but who cares if your mail hub can't do clicky-clicky? It just
needs to deliver the mail...

In our last episode <pan.2005.01.24.00.57.17.802254@SpamMeNot.com>, Uncle
Buck lumbered into the room and mumbled:
Tried to do a dual boot, had nothing but
grief.
The Windoze virus is about about attacking other OSes.
(No, really, they deliberately muck with dual booting and it's always been
a PITA setting one up. Windoze does not play well with others.)
Got fed up, wiped Windoze and all partitions from my system and
installed Linux as my ONLY OS.
Back when I first started with Linux, I kept a dual boot set up. But it
wasn't long before I never bothered to boot the other side and started
realizing I was just wasting drive space.
I've got the Fedora Core distribution with
a Gnome desktop for now. I plan to try getting used to the more textual
side of Linux as time goes on, but for the moment, I need something with a
look & feel like Windows as I go through "withdrawls".
One of the good things about the recent versions of the desktop software
is you can be as "GUI" as you want while finding your way in the command
line (if you even want to bother, which IMO you should because there are
things you can do on the command line more efficiently than in any GUI).
My desktop is both absurdly GUI'd right along with terminal windows all
over the place. That's what's nice, you're not forced one way or the other.
By the way, if you want a more "Windowish" kind of thing, you might want
to test drive KDE. Gnome is more Mac like (may explain why I'm fond of it,
I was a Mac freak for years <g>).
Well, I'll
keep Windoze as a secondary OS on that machine just for the appz that I
can't yet find for Linux.
Which is an ever dwindling number. Much to Mediocresoft's chagrin. <g>
One bit of commercial software to look into if you need to run Winduz apps
is CrossOver. They're over here:
http://www.codeweavers.com/site/products/
I used to use them myself until I realized I didn't need much at all in
terms of Windoze software anymore. But I was happy even with their early
versions. They've improved over time I understand. And the software is
inexpensive (also they have a free trial download so you can try before
you buy).
But man, oh MAN, am I lovin' it! :-) Been
playing for hours, haven't had a single crash yet. Yes, yes, YESSS!!!
:-)
Reminds me of this time I needed to shut my machine down to do some
hardware upgrade or other. I sat down, grabbed the mouse, and then
realized I couldn't remember where the "reboot" command was located
exactly. I had to go looking for it.
It was a brief, silly, but *telling moment. Because the commands you use
frequently become second nature.
My machine has been rebooted more frequently by power losses during storms
than anything.

Oh yes. <G>
You know the only OS crash I've had in at least two years was because of
a very seriously boneheaded maneuver I pulled while mucking around with
some major dependencies. I kicked myself for days. Especially since I've
been on Gentoo a while now and a full blown re-install requires (well, the
way I insist on doing it) a total recompile of *everything.
Considering what I did, I deserved the "penance." <g>

If you still have some partition left, use lilo for dual boot. I've
never had a problem with it.

Blessed is he that sees the light of true understanding.....
Linux is just tons of fun. It is THE OS for surfing the Web: you can
ignore all the worms, virii, etc that target Windoze/IE. The command line
takes a little getting used to, but once you learn a few basic commands,
it can be much more efficient than the "point-and-click" paradigm, which,
you may recall, was invented so that people who have no interest in
learning anything about computers can use them to type letters.
One other word of warning: if you install Windows onto a machine that
already has Linux installed, the Master Boot Record will be overwritten,
and you will need to re-configure your boot manager (GRUB or LILO).
Windows does not believe in respecting an existing, non-M$ OS.

Worm? Virus? What are these things of which you speak?
