Object: O.T. List of Hope
Here is my list of ways, in my naivete, that I can think of that have a
chance of getting us out of the mess we're in or at least offer a glimmer of
hope.
Feel free to add to it.
1. The Republicans will turn upon themselves in a series of backstabbing
power grabs and destroy their control from within.
2. Bunglings and lies the Republicans have been hiding as the election
approached will start to leak out. Things even the red state voters will
notice.
3. The current administration will be satisfied with lining their pockets
for the next 4 years, and not make the effort to actually dismantle the
constitution.
That's all I can think of at the moment.

This is the way most Empires fall, right? I suspect this will indeed
happen, but WHEN is the big question.

1. The Republicans will turn upon themselves in a series of backstabbing
power grabs and destroy their control from within.

That's more or less what happened to them around '92. They probably
won't do it again until the great majority of the politicians who were
on the scene to learn the lesson have retired or died.

2. Bunglings and lies the Republicans have been hiding as the election
approached will start to leak out. Things even the red state voters will
notice.

If the red state voters didn't make the connection yet, they never will.
The only hope here is a long-range one, that the general level of
education in the country may slowly improve.

3. The current administration will be satisfied with lining their pockets
for the next 4 years, and not make the effort to actually dismantle the
constitution.

Maybe, but they've racked up a large debt to the Fundies, and some of
the Republican politicians probably even believe the crap they spew. I'd
say that Roe v. Wade is as good as gone, as is most of the separation of
church and state as we know it. Free speech may get narrowed a bit. The
FBI is going further down the road to behaving as if it were being run
by the ghost of J. Edgar Hoover. Your local Officer Friendly will have
greater lattitude to make you feel like a King. These issues were really
the ones that made me vote for Kerry instead of just writing in the name
of a friend, or putting "Mickey Mouse".

That's all I can think of at the moment.

I read an article recently about how, in recent years, presidents have
not fared too well in their second terms, if they won one.
Here are some memorable moments of second term presidents for the past
30 years:
Nixon - Watergate.
Reagan - Iran/Contra.
Clinton - Monica's blue dress.
Dubya - <waiting>.

The US seem to rely very heavily on oil, more so than any other
country. The wars in Afghanistan and Iraq seem to suggest that the
Bush folks are already starting to worry about supplies running low
and prices going up. When the Afghan pipeline plan fucked up, Iraq was
the next best solution. If *that* doesn't work out for them, things
could start to get a bit complicated for the Republicans.
One thing that might encourage the selfish right-wingers to rethink
their voting strategies would be a hike in fuel prices. At the moment,
it seems (although I'm not an economic expert) that oil prices are
being kept artificially low, and many oil companies are lying about
the reserves they have left. One of two things could happen from this:
either the oil companies will ***** themselves like Enron by pouring
money into subsidies to keep the electorate quiet, or the prices will
have to be allowed to rise. Either way the effect on the Government
will not be good.
There's also some suggestion that the folks who voted on the basis of
Christian right-wing morality might be in for a disappointment. It
would be very difficult for the administration to introduce the moral
policies raised during the election without completely alienating any
lefties or centrists, and they simply can not afford to do that. Not
everyone who voted Bush believes in all that Christian morality - some
of them just bought the homeland security crap.
If the war goes badly, that'll encourage more people to *think* about
what's going on in Iraq rather than just regurgitating party
propaganda.

It's probably already happening. Seems to be the unavoidable fate of
whatever party is in power. There's never enough to go around.
I'm hoping that if the Democratic party stays out of power long enough
it will disintegrate and the Libertarians will fill the gap, just in
time to snatch the reins from the Republicans. Wishful thinking, I
know- but a guy can dream, can't he?

2. Bunglings and lies the Republicans have been hiding as the election
approached will start to leak out. Things even the red state voters will

People are very forgiving of their own politicians' parties. They
forgive and forget and excuse. I don't think this is an option unless
something really serious comes to light, like an election fix- and I'm
NOT talking about the paranoid conspiracy-theories that have been
thrown around here by sullen Kerry supporters. I'm talking about
real, irrefutable evidence, which is possible. I think that would
prove unforgivable to the Republican base and to the country as a
whole.

Nah, I'm very optimistic that he next 4 years will be great year under a great president.

So, is that more of that christerthink "one year will seem as four,
four will seem as one" or are you saying that we'll have one good year
out of four? If it is the latter, will that be 365 days in a row, or a
day or week here and a day or week there?

So, you are saying that you already know all the lies, and some day

Ongoing from the beginning, but getting more so in recent weeks. It is a
coalition in name only, the rot is in there.

2. Bunglings and lies the Republicans have been hiding as the election
approached will start to leak out. Things even the red state voters will

Some will, some won't. Some won't learn until (unless) the time comes that
they are tossed into the gas-chambers or up against the wall.
