Scots is a language too rich and precious for us to allow it to
disappear

In a dusty corner of Edinburgh's George Square, in a room full of
books that are 'used but no worshipped', there's talk of a campaign to
have the world's air traffic controllers speaking Scots: 'Bring her
doon on runwae twinty-seeven, gadgie!'
For a moment the lexicographers Christine Robinson and Pauline Cairns
look delighted by the idea - the fewer vowels would aid understanding,
apparently - and nothing but dust moves in the cityscape of piled
tomes they inhabit above the School of Scottish Studies. And then,
putting such highfalutin' thoughts aside, they turn to a more pressing
issue.
