The carnage of 100 dead in a single grim day in Iraq was still playing
out on television screens last week when the man about to take over
the unenviable job of American military commander there, Gen. George
W. Casey Jr., dryly summarized the situation to Senator John McCain:
"It is certainly not how I envisioned it to be, senator. I think the
insurgency is much stronger than I certainly would have anticipated."
