Feb. 12 - Last Sunday on a flight bound for Madison, Wisc., former
Vermont governor Howard Dean wandered into the back of his campaign
plane, in his socks and bifocals, to hang out with the reporters. He'd
been mostly staying away since his campaign had gone into freefall.
But now he was holding court, answering questions thoughtfully and
directly for about an hour. He knew that he had probably lost that
day's Maine primary vote, but still, he was letting out great big
laughs that revealed the silver in his back teeth. And though the
conversation was all off the record—some of the juicier parts were
"really, really off the record"-the governor seemed to be loosening
up. Knowing your campaign is over will do that for you.
