Regardless of whether or not AT&T was a monopoly or not, it was deemed a
monopoly and it was split. One cannot change that bit of history. SInce
all merers, etc are FTC controlled, there is no monopoly being created
here.
Many people realized what a cash cow LD was, they capitalized on the
selling of long distance calling. Even the Southern Pacific Railroad got
involved as they had thousands of miles of telephone lines that they owned
and were on their property. Thus was born SPRINT which is an acronym. I
leave it as an exercise for determining what that acronym stands for.
Hint: The "SPR" stands for Southern Pacific Railroad.
